MAP IT is a business software partner based in Birkirkara, in the middle of Malta. It helps companies replace systems that have been outgrown, whether that means a first proper ERP (enterprise resource planning) system, a platform for human resources, or a piece of software built from scratch. The company has worked in Malta since 2007 and is an authorised SAP Business One partner.

It is listed among the IT companies in Malta on VisitMalta.co.uk. For UK readers, the simplest way to think of it is as a local specialist in finance, stock and HR systems, comparable to the consultancies that fit out mid-sized businesses in Britain, but small enough that the people who scope your project stay involved.

A software partner, not a general IT shop

The job comes down to a single line: fix a business's systems before the old ones cost it money. Most companies in Malta, are running software that made sense five or fifteen years ago. The team that scopes a project is still present on go-live week, and there is no account manager layer between you and the people doing the work.

The firm is led by its co-founders. Mark Abela Schinas is chief executive and oversees strategy, business development and product direction, working with clients during scoping. Anton Pisani is chief technology officer and leads technical delivery across implementations and development projects, drawing on a background in front-end work, systems architecture and custom builds for CRM, ERP and point of sale tools.

The working approach rests on three habits. First, process knowledge as well as product knowledge: when a distribution business raises a problem such as driver cash collection, the answer is a description of exactly how it was solved before, not a general statement that the software can cope. Second, complete scoping, so the price covers everything the project really needs from the start. Third, staying small enough to answer the phone, with senior people involved after sign-off rather than only in the sales meeting. Compared with large consultancies, where half a dozen people may attend the first meeting and none will know your business in six months, this direct access is the main selling point.

The company holds ISO 9001 certification for quality management, and its footer carries quality and information security policies. Since August 2023 it has also belonged to the Delphi Alliance, a global network of independent firms across thirteen professional services. Membership is exclusive by country and service line, so MAP IT is the only Maltese IT firm in it, giving access to specialists in 20 countries when a client's project crosses a border.

SAP Business One for growing companies

SAP Business One is the flagship product. It brings purchasing, inventory, sales, financials and production into one system with one set of numbers. It is aimed at the point where spreadsheets, Sage, Xero or several disconnected systems can no longer answer a question such as what the real margin was this month.

Core areas are financial management (general ledger, budgeting, banking and consolidated reporting), sales and customer management from quote to cash, purchasing and inventory control, built-in business intelligence, and configuration for manufacturing, wholesale distribution and retail. It can run on-premise or in the cloud and uses SAP HANA's in-memory platform for fast reports. Multi-company groups benefit most, because one system can consolidate several sets of books and currencies.

The typical customer is a Malta-registered business of 50 or more employees where a finance director or financial controller leads the project. Very small, single-entity businesses with simple accounts are told frankly that this is more system than they need. Implementations are scoped with data migration, integrations and training included, and most single-company projects run a few months from signed scope to go-live. Add-ons include SAP Analytics Cloud for deeper reporting and SAP Customer Checkout for retail tills.

Kumpass: add-on modules for distribution and logistics

Kumpass is MAP IT's own add-on suite for SAP Business One, built from gaps that came up repeatedly in client implementations. It is designed for distribution, logistics and multi-entity groups, and it can be installed one module at a time. The modules cover a customer portal where clients see their own invoices, statements and order history, and logistics tools that let drivers see routes on a tablet, capture signatures at the door and reconcile cash collected against invoices the same day.

Others automate warehouse pick-lists by route, let sales representatives enter quotes, orders and returns from a tablet, keep master data and pricing in sync across several company databases, and manage approval-driven purchase orders. The inter-company module can generate standard payment files for banks including BOV and HSBC. Kumpass has no licensing restrictions on where it runs and has been deployed in Malta and Cyprus.

It only works alongside SAP Business One. A business that does not use SAP and has no plans to is better served by the custom development team, which builds bespoke tools instead.

Factorial HRIS and custom development

Factorial is a human resources information system covering recruitment, onboarding, reviews and training, time management such as clocking in, shift planning and leave requests, payroll and expense claims, and tracking of devices and software. MAP IT implements it with Malta's leave rules and public holidays configured from the start, and positions it for companies of roughly 40 to 200 people with real HR work to manage.

Custom development covers problems that no off-the-shelf product handles. Past work spans manufacturing, insurance, logistics and pharmaceuticals, including batch tracking and quality control, machinery integrations, policy administration, claims and case management, delivery management and route planning, and reporting tools. The same in-house team that scopes a project builds it, with nothing handed to subcontractors. It also works through partners such as Boyum IT, Sharperlight, Traild, ELO Digital Office and NewIntelligence.

Who MAP IT works with and why it matters to you

The client base spans distribution and logistics, insurance, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals and retail. These are the sectors that drive much of the island economy described in our financial services overview and in the iGaming guide, and they are exactly where finance-led systems and HR platforms matter once a company passes a few dozen staff.

If you are planning to base a company here, it helps to settle the legal and tax side first. Our pages on Malta's corporate tax structure and tax for UK nationals explain the basics, and CLA Malta is our featured partner for company set-up. For individuals, the relocation guide and the digital nomad guide cover the move itself.

How a project starts and where to find the office

Most clients arrive with a process problem rather than a product in mind, and working out which answer fits, or whether the answer is not yet, is part of the service. Anyone can start without a specification: bring the problem and the team will read any scoping document you already have. A real person reads each enquiry and arranges the call, and simple questions are answered by reply.

Every solution follows the same four steps. Discovery happens on site, mapping how the month closes, where the spreadsheets are and what breaks. The team then returns with a written diagnosis and one upfront price for the full scope, rather than an entry number that grows through change orders. Specification, build and handover follow, with staff on site or on call during go-live week and reachable afterwards.

The office is in Birkirkara, a short drive from Valletta, and our Valletta guide and flights to Malta page help if you are visiting for a meeting. MAP IT also takes work that does not stay on the island, and will look at an ERP implemented elsewhere that has not gone to plan. Questions about MAP IT

What does MAP IT do?

MAP IT implements SAP Business One ERP and its own Kumpass add-on modules, rolls out the Factorial HR platform, and builds custom software for Maltese businesses that have outgrown their current systems.

Where is MAP IT based?

The office is at 9, Level 3, Triq il-Papa Urbanu VIII in Birkirkara BKR 1424, in central Malta, a short drive from Valletta and most of the island's business areas.

Who is SAP Business One suited to?

It suits finance-led, Malta-registered businesses of typically 50 or more employees in stock, manufacturing or distribution, or groups consolidating several companies. Small single-entity businesses with simple accounting are told it is more system than they need.

What is Kumpass?

Kumpass is MAP IT's own add-on suite for SAP Business One, with independent modules for customer portals, logistics and driver cash collection, pick-lists, sales rep ordering, inter-company sync and procurement.

Does MAP IT only work in Malta?

Malta is home and most clients are here, but the work is not limited to the island. Kumpass runs on SAP Business One anywhere and has been deployed in Cyprus as well as Malta.

What happens on a discovery call?

The team asks about your processes, such as how the month closes and where spreadsheets are used. It lasts 15 to 45 minutes, needs no preparation, and carries no charge or obligation.

How long does an implementation take?

That depends on the number of entities and the amount of data to migrate. Most single-company SAP implementations run a few months from signed scope to go-live, and a real timeline follows the discovery stage.
