MeDirect is a Maltese digital bank based at The Centre, Tigné Point, in Sliema, serving more than 180,000 customers through its online platform and mobile app. It offers investing in funds, shares, ETFs and bonds, savings and fixed term deposits, a free multi-currency current account, home loans and corporate banking. Enquiries go to the bank through the VisitMalta.co.uk form on this page.
MeDirect calls itself Malta's first digital bank, and it is also one of the country's systemic banks, meaning it is large enough to matter to the stability of the local financial system. Its Maltese entity, MeDirect Bank (Malta) plc, is based at The Centre on Tigné Point in Sliema, the peninsula of offices, shops and flats facing Valletta across Marsamxett Harbour. The bank serves more than 180,000 customers and is built around an online platform and mobile app rather than a large branch network.
For a UK reader, the appeal is a single place to save, invest and handle everyday payments in Malta, with access to thousands of funds and securities. On VisitMalta.co.uk MeDirect is listed in our directory of banks in Malta, and our overview of financial services in Malta explains how it fits into the wider sector.
Malta's first digital bank
MeDirect describes itself as a pan-European bank operating in a worldwide market. Alongside daily banking, savings, mortgages and corporate services, it gives clients access to more than 4,300 financial instruments, so it aims to cover both everyday banking and long-term investing in one account. The group employs more than 365 people, drawn from many countries, and combines its own technology with personal support from staff.
The bank has roots going back to its formative stage in 2006, and it was bought and recapitalised in 2009. Its earlier annual reports were published under the name Mediterranean Bank plc before the MeDirect name was adopted. The group also runs MeDirect Belgium, its main subsidiary, and announced its entry into the Dutch market in 2023.
Four principles guide the way it works: offering high quality products, being open about costs with no hidden fees, explaining things in plain language, and staying independent. That last point matters for investors, because MeDirect does not manage investment products of its own. Instead, it selects funds and other products from leading international providers it trusts, BlackRock among its partners.
Investing on your own, with guidance or fully managed
The investment offer is split into three routes. Clients who want to make their own decisions can buy mutual funds, equities, exchange traded funds (ETFs) and bonds through the platform, and can bring existing holdings together in one place. Those who are newer to investing can choose model portfolios or an advisory service, where an adviser recommends a strategy and the client makes the final call. For people who would rather leave it to professionals, MeManaged is the discretionary service, in which the bank's team makes the investment decisions on the client's behalf.
Before giving advice or managing a portfolio, MeDirect carries out a suitability assessment under the EU MiFID II rules, which includes asking about your environmental, social and governance preferences. The platform also lets you filter funds and ETFs that focus on sustainability. In May 2026 the bank introduced lower and simpler pricing for investment services on its digital platform, and an Educational Series and free webinars help clients build their knowledge.
Investing carries risk, and the value of investments can fall as well as rise. The bank points clients to the key information documents and prospectuses for each product, which are available free of charge.
Savings, current accounts and cards
Savers can choose between the MeMax Savings Account, an instant access account that pays interest every month, the Me Savings Account, designed for putting money aside without the temptation to spend it, and a Fixed Term Deposit Account for a guaranteed rate over a set period. There are no hidden account or maintenance fees, and eligible deposits are protected up to €100,000 under the Depositor Compensation Scheme.
For everyday banking there is a free current account with multi-currency options, direct debits, bill payments and free instant SEPA transfers within the euro payments area. Customers get a free card in physical or virtual form, which can be added to Apple Pay. Accounts are managed through the online platform and mobile app, and opening one can be done online in minutes. If you are planning a move, our guide to relocating to Malta from the UK covers setting up local banking, and remote workers will find useful context in our guide to working remotely from Malta.
Home loans and corporate banking
MeDirect offers mortgages, including Green Home Loans with preferential rates for borrowers who commit to making their property energy efficient. Anyone buying property in Malta may want to read our Malta tax guide for UK nationals alongside any lending conversation.
Companies can open corporate accounts, and the bank also lists cash flow management and corporate services. Account opening follows a structured list of requirements, starting with an Account Opening Information Questionnaire, and the team gives personal help during the early stages. Business owners setting up in Malta can learn more about how Malta taxes companies before they apply.
Regulation, ownership and results
MeDirect Bank (Malta) plc is regulated by the Malta Financial Services Authority and licensed to carry on banking business under the Banking Act and investment services under the Investment Services Act. It is also registered as a tied insurance intermediary. Because it is licensed in Malta, it can offer regulated services across the European Union under the passporting regime, though it may not be able to serve people located outside the EU. Ernst and Young Malta carries out the statutory audit of its annual accounts.
The group's controlling shareholder is Banka CREDITAS, which completed its purchase of MDB Group in September 2025 and has invested €40 million of new capital so far. In its results for the first half of 2026, MeDirect reported a return to a profit before tax of €2.4 million and a balance sheet that grew by 9% to €5.8 billion. In May 2026 the group received the Digital Savings and Investing Platform Excellence Award 2026 (Europe) from Capital Finance International.
Leadership
The board is chaired by Bart Bronselaer, an independent non-executive director with more than 30 years in European financial services. Jean-Claude Maher, who spent many years at Deutsche Bank, became Group Chief Executive Officer in February 2025. Izabela Banas is Group Chief Financial Officer, Chris Portelli is Chief Technology Officer and Martin Kubíček is Group Chief Risk Officer. Independent directors include John Zarb, Dina Quraishi, Dr Steve Agius and Maria Micallef, with Josef Holub as a non-executive director.
Among the wider management team, Murali Subramanian is Chief Commercial Officer, Lorraine Bonello Ghio is Chief Administration Officer and Emma Camilleri, a British national who has lived in Malta for many years, is Chief People Officer.
Sustainability and community
MeDirect's ESG strategy rests on four pillars: governance, employees, environment and society. Its work has been recognised through EcoVadis sustainability ratings, and it is aligning its internet banking and app with the WCAG 2.1 Level AA accessibility standard, with features such as screen reader support and scalable text.
Community sponsorship is wide ranging. The bank is the Official Banking Partner of the Malta Premier League, supports the Birgu Regatta Club, a respected rowing club from the town covered in our Vittoriosa guide, and sponsored Rock in the Forest 2026 at Ta' Qali in aid of the Sigma Foundation. It has backed the contemporary dance company ŻfinMalta, sponsors a child through Inspire's STEP Beyond programme and has signed a two year deal with the sailing yacht Geisha-MeDirect for races including the Rolex Middle Sea Race.
On the sister island, its branch in Victoria hosted registration for the Otters swimming school, and the bank was Official Banking Partner of the Spartacus endurance events in Marsalforn. Our Gozo guide covers both towns for visitors.
