MMH Malta Ltd operates the Mediterranean Maritime Hub, a large facility at Xatt il-Mollijiet in Marsa, on the site of the former Malta shipbuilding yard in the Grand Harbour. The business supports the marine and the oil and gas industries with port services, technical services, crew recruitment and logistics, training and yachting services, all in one location in the middle of the Mediterranean.

For UK readers the parts most likely to matter are the dry marina and yachting services for boat owners, the recruitment and crew logistics side for people seeking maritime work, and the MMH Academy for training. The business appears in our directories of marina services in Malta and recruitment agencies in Malta.

From Elesolar to the Maritime Hub

The group's history goes back to 1981, when Paul Abela founded Elesolar Company Ltd to work on building services engineering projects in Malta. In 2000 the company moved into the offshore oil and gas sector. In 2001 two further companies followed, Ableman International for human resource management and Manticare for maintenance, engineering and logistics, and in 2008 these formed the Ablecare Oilfield Services Group. A drilling careers academy was launched in 2014.

In 2016 the Maltese government granted the group a 65-year lease to develop and run the former Marsa Shipyard facilities, which became the Mediterranean Maritime Hub. The group's subsidiaries were then merged into MMH Malta Ltd, a single organisation built around the idea of one group and one solution. The founder previously chaired Gozo Channel Company between 1992 and 1997.

Services at the hub

Port services cover marine operations, yard operations and warehousing, shipping and logistics, and procurement. Technical services cover survey support, deactivation, preservation and reactivation of equipment, inspection and certification, and piping. Separate pages cover yachting services and the dry marina, a vessel care function, MMH Finance and case studies.

The aim is to give a client a full supply chain in a single place, with integrated planning that shortens turnarounds, supports leaner crews and cuts the time an asset spends not working. MMH is also building a network across the Mediterranean so that the same standard of support is available onshore and offshore. Marsa sits close to the capital, and our Valletta guide and Three Cities guide cover the harbour area around it. Its stated ambition is to make Malta the regional centre for support services to the marine and oil and gas industries.

People, training and recruitment

Executive Chairperson Angelique Abela leads strategy and business development and oversees new projects, including the growth of the MMH Academy, which was established in 2014. Louisa Abela is a director who heads crew recruitment and logistics and also sits on the board of Mulberry Insurance Brokers Limited, a group subsidiary, and Paul Abela Jr is a director with a nautical science background who works in marine, technical services and vessel care.

The recruitment side supplies pre-screened and pre-qualified personnel for projects, and the Academy provides training at its San Gwann base. If you are considering a career move, our Malta relocation guide explains life on the islands, and for general insurance questions you could look at AIB Insurance Brokers Limited.

Quality standards and corporate support

MMH holds ISO 9001 quality management, ISO 45001 occupational health and safety and ISO 14001 environmental management accreditation, with its systems audited and certified by RINA. Published policies cover health and safety, the environment, security, data protection, spill response, driving and drug and alcohol use, so visitors and contractors know the rules on site.
