Oh Yeah Malta is a boat tour and water sports operator based at Mellieħa Bay, the long sandy bay at the north-west end of the main island. Its trips and hire boats all start from the Tunny Net Jetty, so one meeting point covers everything from a family morning cruise to a self-drive speedboat afternoon. For many UK visitors staying in the north, it is one of the easiest ways to reach Comino and the Blue Lagoon without arranging a ferry connection.
The business is listed in our directory of water sports in Malta and in the boat charter category, which suits its mix of scheduled cruises and boats you hire yourself.
Cruises to Comino and the Blue Lagoon
Most of the scheduled trips head across the channel to Comino, the tiny car-free island between Malta and Gozo. Our Blue Lagoon guide explains why the sheltered turquoise bay is so popular, and these cruises are built around it.
The half-day trip leaves Mellieħa at 9.45am, with boarding from 9.00am, and is back at about 1.30pm. It gives roughly an hour and a half in the water at the lagoon, plus a sightseeing pass by the sea caves of Comino: Crystal Lagoon, Popeye's Cave, Santa Maria Caves, Elephant Head Rock and Smugglers' Cave. Because the day is shorter and there is more shade aboard, it is aimed at families with young children. A faster powerboat version takes up to 19 passengers, leaves at 10.30am and returns around 12.45pm, with an hour at the lagoon. There are also longer daily cruises of six hours or more, one of which links Malta, Gozo and Comino, and our Gozo guide helps you decide whether that day out appeals.
The sunset cruise runs from May to mid-October, with a swim at the lagoon and a glass of Prosecco for every passenger as the light fades. Departure is at 4.30pm from May to the end of August and 4.00pm from September, so check the season when you book. Access to the lagoon beach needs a free pass, booked in advance for the morning or evening slot. Snorkelling gear can be rented on board for €5.
Valletta Grand Harbour cruise
For a change from swimming, an afternoon cruise leaves Mellieħa at 2.00pm and returns at about 5.45pm. It sails down the east coast past St Paul's Islands and Sliema Creek, then into the Grand Harbour beneath the walls of Valletta city and slowly on through the creeks of the Three Cities. It suits history fans and photographers, and the route may change with the weather and sea state. Food and drinks are sold on board.
Self-drive speedboat hire
If you would rather set your own pace, the business hires out self-drive speedboats from Mellieħa Bay. No boat licence is required, but the driver must have real boat-handling experience and be at least 21. Rates are €150 for two hours, €185 for three, €220 for four, €255 for five and €290 for six, and a boat takes up to six people. Fuel is not included and is charged by the litre at €1.80, with the tank refilled after your trip. No deposit is taken, although the driver is responsible for damage caused by negligence.
Each boat carries life jackets, an anchor, a canopy for shade, a ladder and Bluetooth music, and you receive a short briefing on operation and safety before setting off. You can bring food, soft drinks and water, but alcohol is not allowed on board. Arrive 30 minutes before your slot, because late arrivals lose rental time. Boats must be driven at a sensible cruising speed and kept clear of crowded bays.
Water sports and jet skis
The activity menu is priced per ride: a banana slider or crazy sofa ride at €45, a double kayak at €20, double parasailing at €90 for around ten to twelve minutes in the air, and jet ski hire at €80 for 30 minutes. Guided jet ski safaris run for 90 minutes at €195 or 120 minutes at €225. The sea, light and wind are at their best in summer, and our Malta weather guide shows what to expect month by month.
Tour days fit well with a stay in the north, and our Mellieħa area guide covers beaches, walks and nearby sights such as Popeye Village. Browse the wider options in our things to do in Malta guide, and compare other bays in best beaches in Malta. Another local operator is Amazing Boat Trips Malta.
