Rudy Buhler Art, trading as The Colour Project, is a contemporary modern art gallery in the heart of Marsaskala, a harbour town on the south-east coast of Malta. It is devoted to abstract, informal and non-figurative work, and its bright rooms are a pleasant stop for anyone exploring the quieter side of the island.
On VisitMalta.co.uk the gallery is listed with other art galleries in Malta. If you are comparing areas for a holiday, our guide to where to stay in Malta shows how the south-east compares with the resorts of the north.
The story behind The Colour Project
The gallery grew out of the founder's own life as a painter. After closing a chapter of his career in Switzerland, Rudy Buhler moved to Malta to commit fully to abstract painting, and in the early 2020s the Contemporary Modern Art Gallery was born. It began as a way of bringing his own work into the public eye and has since become a space where emerging and established artists are seen and appreciated.
His own path started with felt pens, crayons and pencils at school in Switzerland, moved through watercolour, pastel and oil, and found its footing with acrylic, which suits a layered, intuitive way of working. Each painting begins from a single colour that sets the mood. Many UK readers have made the same move to the island, and our Malta relocation guide explains how.
What you will see
The mission is to discover and promote artists from Malta and beyond, and to put original, high quality art in public view. The gallery shows bold paintings and sculpture by local and international artists, working with colour, shape and texture so that visitors are invited to pause and respond for themselves.
Recent programme highlights include Re-visiting, Rudy Buhler's own exhibition at the start of 2026, and Before the Coffee Gets Cold by the Maltese artist Matthew Joseph Casha, which ran from 22 May to 14 June 2026. The online shop lists around 20 works, among them paintings by Anna Galea and Margrith Zuberbühler and sculptures by Censu Fenech. Our things to do in Malta page suggests how to build a day around a visit.
Events and open-air exhibitions
Beyond the gallery walls, open-air exhibitions bring art into public spaces on the Marsaskala waterfront, and the gallery has hosted openings, talks and live music. Visitors can ask to receive invitations to vernissages, master classes, collectors' events and exhibitions, and the gallery shares information on art for homes, families and workplaces.
The setting by the water is part of the appeal, and our guide to the best beaches in Malta covers swimming spots for the rest of the day. Artists who would like to show their work are also invited to get in touch with the gallery.
Because the programme changes with each exhibition, a second visit is rarely the same as the first, and the gallery's newsletter is the simplest way to hear about upcoming events before they open to the public. Collectors are welcome to ask about works on display, and visitors who simply want to look around are equally welcome during opening hours.
Visiting and getting in touch
The gallery is at Quayside Court on Triq Is-Salini. It opens during each exhibition, Wednesday to Sunday, from 10am to 1pm and from 5pm to 8pm, and at other times by appointment, so it is wise to check before travelling. The Malta weather guide can help with timing, and our page on flights to Malta covers routes from the UK.
If you are combining art with sightseeing, our Valletta guide describes the capital, and our Malta holidays overview gives wider ideas. To ask about an exhibition, a work or a visit, use the VisitMalta.co.uk enquiry form on this page and we will pass your message to the gallery.
