Seven Steps is a boutique studio in San Pawl tat-Targa, a residential part of Naxxar in the middle of Malta. Founded in 2015 by Sarah Jane Zrinzo, it is a holistic studio built around individual attention and monitoring each client's progress. The emphasis is on safe practice and consistency rather than big, anonymous classes.
The studio mainly teaches Pilates, with yoga, creative ballet and sensory play for young children on the wider menu. It is a good option for UK residents who want a regular class, and for longer-stay visitors who prefer a small group to a gym. On VisitMalta.co.uk it is listed among Pilates studios in Malta.
The seven principles
The name comes from the seven principles that Joseph Pilates built his method on: alignment, breathing, centring, control, precision, stamina and coordination or flow. Classes are designed to improve fitness and ease muscular and joint discomfort, with an instructor who watches technique closely. This page offers no medical advice, and anyone with an injury should speak to their own healthcare professional before starting.
Classes and private sessions
Core Pilates is the main class. Sarah Jane teaches on Monday at 9:30 and 10:30 in the morning and 17:30 in the evening, on Wednesday at 09:00, on Thursday at 9:30 and 17:30, and on Friday at 09:00. Anne Marie Magri teaches on Tuesday evenings at 18:30 and 19:30. Each class lasts an hour, and the timetable can change with notice.
One-to-one and shared private sessions are available, and they are the recommended starting point for anyone who has never tried Pilates. Pre-natal Pilates and Pilates for dancers are currently offered as private or shared private sessions. Classes are small and places are filled first come, first served, with a waitlist if a class is full.
Prices and booking policies
A single group class costs €18. A package of seven classes costs €100 and is valid for two months, while a package of fourteen costs €190 and is valid for four months. Packages let you commit to a regular class time, and you can swap to another slot subject to availability. A private one-hour session costs €40 for one person, and a shared private session costs €20 per person for up to two people. Private sessions can be booked outside the timetable.
Cancellations need at least 24 hours' notice, otherwise the package card is stamped, and no-shows are charged. A package can be frozen if you are away from Malta, provided it is still within its expiry date, which suits visitors who split their time between the UK and Malta.
The teachers
Sarah Jane Zrinzo is the founder and studio director. She holds a Level 3 qualification registered with the Body Control Pilates Association UK and trained in dance and ballet, and she danced professionally at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden before teaching. Anne Marie Magri is a Pilates teacher recently qualified with Body Control Pilates, and Rebekah Debono teaches yoga as a Yoga Alliance qualified teacher and holistic therapist. Hannah Martirano covers Pilates classes, and Rachel Fabri Camilleri leads sensory play.
Naxxar is close to Mosta and Mdina, so a class can fit around a day out, and our Mdina guide and things to do in Malta pages have ideas. Newcomers settling in can also read the relocating to Malta guide.
