Birkirkara is not a resort town, but for anyone living in central Malta, or staying a while for work, study or sport, the St Aloysius Sports and Recreational Complex is one of the more substantial sports campuses on the island. It belongs to St Aloysius College, the Jesuit school founded in Birkirkara in 1907, and grew from a sports hall opened in 1997 into a modern site shared with a specialist sports school. It is listed in our directory of sports clubs in Malta.
The guiding idea is simple: sport as part of a healthy, well rounded life, offered to the college's own students, their families and the wider community, with a Christian ethos of pastoral care behind it.
What is on site
The outdoor grounds include a running track and an artificial turf football pitch, while the original sports complex houses an indoor multi-sport pavilion and a fully equipped gym. In the first phase of a major redevelopment, the pavilion was rebuilt with a new spectators' stand, showers and changing rooms, and the canteen, fitness centre and two dance studios were completely overhauled. The dance facilities were designed for use after school hours as well as during lessons.
The second phase added around 7,000 square metres of new sports space. That includes a 25 metre swimming pool with a retractable roof, a dedicated gymnastics hall, new football grounds, padel courts and a sports science centre, alongside a sport themed childcare and kindergarten centre. If you are mainly looking for somewhere to swim, compare the swimming pools in Malta we list, and for racket sports see our page on tennis and padel in Malta.
The Mediterranean College of Sport
The redevelopment came from a partnership between the Jesuits who run St Aloysius College and the Vassallo Group, and its centrepiece is the Mediterranean College of Sport. This independent school opened on the site in September 2024 and was inaugurated that November by the President of Malta. Student athletes follow secondary and sixth form education while specialising in their own sport, with timetables built around training and competition, and the school expects to grow to around 400 pupils.
The arrangement works both ways: St Aloysius students use most of the new facilities, and the sports college benefits from the older grounds. Families moving to the island with a sporty teenager may find this worth looking into, and our Malta relocation guide covers the practical side of the move, while the international schools in Malta listing shows other options.
Using the complex as a member of the public
Daytime use belongs to the schools, but the football pitch, running track and sports complex open to the public after school hours, and sports organisations can also use the facilities in the evenings. That makes the site useful for local clubs, adult teams and individuals who want a gym, a track session or a space for dance. Secondary and sixth form students of St Aloysius have free use of the gym from 3pm.
There is also on campus accommodation for international students and for visiting teams, and teams and clubs can organise retreats and training camps here for athletes and coaches. A warm winter climate makes Malta a popular base for pre season training, and our Malta weather guide shows what to expect month by month. For independent gyms in the area, see the gyms in Malta listing or nearby Birkirkara Tennis Club.
Birkirkara and the centre of the island
Birkirkara is one of Malta's largest towns, a busy residential place in the middle of the island with an attractive old core around its baroque parish churches and the remains of the old Malta railway, which once ran past the college. It is close to Balzan, Attard and the San Anton Gardens, and within easy reach of both the capital and the coast.
Visitors staying for a training camp or a longer stay can fill their free time with day trips. Valletta is a short bus ride away, and our Valletta guide has the highlights, while the silent hilltop city of Mdina is a quick hop west, as our Mdina guide explains. To ask the complex about access, bookings for teams or anything else, use the VisitMalta.co.uk enquiry form on this page and we will pass your message on.
