Ta' Nikol Art Gallery presents the work of Emmanuel Previ, a Gozitan painter who works mainly in oil on canvas. His subjects are the places and scenes visitors fall for on the islands: harbours full of painted fishing boats, honey-coloured village lanes, baroque churches, coastal rock formations and big skies, alongside bolder pieces of galloping horses, abstracts and surrealist fantasies.
The gallery is listed in Victoria, the capital of Gozo, and forms part of our directory of art galleries in Malta. For UK visitors it offers something more personal than a souvenir shop: an original painting by a living local artist, with the option to commission something of your own.
What Emmanuel Previ paints
The collection is grouped into horses, abstracts, surrealism, landscapes and seascapes. Gozo features heavily: recent titles include St George Basilica, Inland Sea Gozo, Balcony in Victoria Gozo, Ghasri Village and Mgarr Gozo Harbour Fishermen's. There are also views from the main island, among them The Three Cities, Maltese Gondola in Birgu, Sqaq fil-Birgu, San Anton Fountain and Lower Barrakka Valletta.
Past works show the same range, with the Azure Window, narrow streets at the Citadel, Golden Sunrise Birgu and Mystic Gozo Harbour among the titles. The more imaginative side includes Shipwrecked Hephaestus, Metamorphosis and Infinity, plus powerful seascapes such as Perfect Wave. Many of these places can be visited in person using our Valletta travel guide, guide to visiting Gozo and Three Cities guide, and the paintings of Birgu pair well with the Vittoriosa walking guide.
The Lower Barrakka painting is a good prompt to see the real view from the nearby Upper Barrakka Gardens, which look over the Grand Harbour.
Buying original paintings
Works that are currently available are shown with their size and, where printed, their price. St George Basilica is an original oil painting measuring 50 cm by 70 cm at €1,550, and Inland Sea Gozo-2 is an original oil painting measuring 40 cm by 50 cm at €375. Ask for details of any other painting you like.
Sold paintings are kept in an online archive that shows the range of work and the collections it has reached around the world. One example is Furious, an oil on canvas measuring 90 cm by 80 cm, which went to a private collector in Japan. Every image of the paintings is protected by copyright and cannot be reproduced.
Anyone shipping a painting home to the UK should discuss packing and delivery with the gallery when enquiring. The gallery does not publish shipping terms.
Private commissions
From time to time Emmanuel Previ accepts a private commission for a painting or a drawing. The usual route is to describe your idea in a short note, give your name and contact details and wait for a reply. Commissions are taken on only from time to time, so an enquiry does not guarantee a place.
A commission can suit a special occasion, a favourite corner of Malta or Gozo, or a family home. If you have a view in mind, such as a harbour you stayed beside, say so in your enquiry. For ideas on where to find scenes worth painting, our things to do in Malta page is a useful starting point, and 2B Gallery is another gallery in the directory if you want to compare styles.
