Tanaan Studio is the independent practice of Juan Matarranz, a multidisciplinary designer and art director with more than 25 years of experience across brand identity, product design, UX and UI, web design and digital graphics. It works from Sliema, the busy seafront town on Malta's north-east coast, and combines strategy, creativity, design and technology to help companies build distinctive brands and products.

The studio is listed on VisitMalta.co.uk with our graphic designers in Malta. It will suit businesses that want one senior creative to handle the full journey, from the first idea to the finished logo, interface or printed piece.

How the studio works

Every project is approached from concept to execution, mixing different disciplines and tools to find the right answer for each challenge. Generative AI is increasingly part of that process, used to explore ideas, develop visual concepts, prototype and produce content more quickly and flexibly. The studio lists creative AI and AI workflows alongside graphic design, UI and UX, branding, product design and art direction.

The design philosophy is that good work should look right, communicate clearly, solve a problem and make people feel something. Failure is treated as part of the process, and the studio prefers to take creative risks rather than play it safe. He holds certifications in digital technology direction and in photography from CEV.

Selected projects

The portfolio runs from restaurants to games. Brasserie Rodin is a restaurant website designed to be elegant and easy to use, with an easy reservation method for both desktop and mobile devices, along with a drinks menu. Yokozuma Socks is a set of funny socks designed to promote the launch of a sumo game.

A long run of work for the iGaming supplier Yggdrasil includes the 2019 company kick-off in Krakow, Poland, a two-day event for staff from around the world. The Casino Royale and Art Deco theme shaped merchandise, digital and printed material that branded each venue. Another project is Yggdrasil's Kitchen, a cookbook where games meet food. Our iGaming in Malta guide explains why this sector matters on the island.

Other work includes a brand identity for Neuryvas, a neurological clinic, with a colourful, cheerful logotype and consistent stationery, plus casino rebrands, adverts, illustrations and digital campaigns.

Skills and services

The studio lists creative direction, concept development, problem solving, leading teams, branding, product design, UX and UI, design systems, advertising, typography, sketching and digital art, together with HTML and CSS. In practice that means a client can brief logos, packaging, websites, apps, adverts or retouched images in one conversation. For a UK company, working with a single designer in a similar time zone makes feedback simple: you speak to the person who makes the work, agree the direction, and see ideas develop without layers of account management. A small studio also suits start-ups that need a brand, a site and a few printed items at the same time, and larger firms that need extra creative capacity for one campaign. Freelancers and remote workers weighing a base on the island might also read our digital nomad guide and our Malta relocation guide.
