Temple Studios is a recording studio in Mistra Bay, in the Mellieħa and St Paul's Bay area of northern Malta. It has two rooms, a large Neve-equipped Studio A and a Trident-equipped Studio B, with gardens, backline and vintage gear. Enquiries can be sent through the VisitMalta.co.uk form on this page.
Temple Studios sits in Mistra Bay on Malta's north-west coast, a quiet spot with sea views, gardens and plenty of natural light. The studio describes its position as a balance between the efficiency of a city studio and the languid retreat of a faraway residential one, without the stress of the first or the distractions of the second. For a band travelling from the UK, that means a place to concentrate on the record while still being close to the island's amenities.
The studio's client list is described as a who's who of record companies and major artists. It is listed with the island's recording studios in Malta, and the surrounding area is covered in our Mellieħa guide.
Studio A, the Neve Room
Studio A is built around a large live area of 64 square metres with adjacent isolation booths, and a very large 80 square metre control room with a machine room next door. Both the control room and the performance spaces are bright, with plenty of natural light, which is rare in recording studios.
The console is a Neve VR60 Legend with flying faders, paired with a two-inch Otari MTR90 MkII 24-track analogue tape machine and an Avid Pro Tools HD2 Accel system with 24 inputs and 48 outputs. That mix of tape and digital lets an engineer record to tape for its character, then edit and mix in the computer.
A wide range of backline and instruments is kept on site, and the studio can arrange hire of more unusual items on the island. It also has regular arrangements with international pro audio hire companies, offering same-day service from London, Paris or Rome. The gallery shows tube microphones, vintage synthesisers, electric guitars and a Fender Rhodes electric piano.
The floor plan on the studio's site shows the live area, isolation booths and control room together with a kitchen, a games room and a TV room, so a band has space to rest between takes without leaving the building. That mix of working and living space is what the studio means by a residential feel.
Studio B, the Trident Room
Studio B is the Trident Room. It is becoming popular with clients because of its cosy atmosphere and high standard of specification, and it suits sessions where a more intimate space helps, such as vocals, overdubs or smaller projects.
Both rooms share the studio's equipment list, which includes a growing collection of vintage gear. If you are weighing up where to base a project, our guides to hotels in Mellieħa and hotels in Qawra and St Paul's Bay show the nearest resorts, and our guide to where to stay in Malta compares the wider island.
Gardens, bay and time off
The grounds are a feature of the studio. The gallery shows palm trees in the back garden, a terrace with a parasol, an iron gate looking onto the bay and a path leading to the water. The site also points out nearby landmarks such as Selmun Palace and the St Paul's Islets, and a tunnel down to Mistra Bay.
Between takes, musicians can take a swim at one of the best beaches in Malta, visit Popeye Village in Mellieħa, or see the capital in our Valletta guide. Our Malta weather guide helps you choose the right month, and our flights to Malta guide covers travel from the UK.
