Wicked and Loud is a recording and music production studio in Paola, on the south side of the Grand Harbour area, owned and run by the Maltese composer, songwriter and producer Elton Zarb. It suits singers, songwriters and bands who want an experienced producer beside them from the first idea to the finished master, and it also serves businesses that need music for adverts and branding.
The studio keeps a base in Malta and another in London, and it takes on work from clients elsewhere too. Paola is only a few minutes from the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum, so a session can sit comfortably beside a day of sightseeing. On VisitMalta.co.uk the studio is listed with the island's recording studios in Malta.
Who is behind the studio
Elton Zarb is a musician with an international reputation. He has scored musicals and films, had chart success on different continents and is a two-time winner of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest as a writer, with The Start in 2013 and Not My Soul in 2015. He also wrote and scored the music for the Junior Eurovision shows staged in Malta in 2014 and 2016.
His work crosses hip-hop, R&B, dance, pop and orchestral styles, and he has produced and remixed tracks for other artists. In 2013 he composed and produced the musical Hidmietna, and in 2018 he was given the job of creating the music for the opening ceremony of Valletta 2018, when the capital was European Capital of Culture. If that celebration interests you, our Valletta guide explains what the city offers today.
Recognition at home includes the Medal for Service to the Republic, presented by the President of Malta in 2013 and again in 2015, and the Zejtun Achievement Award from his home town's mayor in 2013. Films he has scored include Saul: The Journey to Damascus, A Dangerous Arrangement and Habbilni Ha Nirbah.
Music production, mixing and mastering
The core of the studio is music production. A team of producers and audio engineers works with an artist on songwriting and arrangement, then records, mixes and masters the material to a professional standard. The stated aim is simple: do whatever serves the song and the artist best.
The control room is built around a large mixing console, studio monitors and a wall-mounted screen, as the photos on this page show. Sessions do not have to be local. You can listen in and contribute from wherever you are, which helps if you are a UK artist who cannot travel for every stage of a project.

Corporate music and branding
Wicked and Loud also writes and records music for business. That includes jingles for radio, television and online adverts, voice-overs, and music for presentations, along with clean recordings of speeches for explainer videos. The team can write a melody around a slogan and will work to whatever brief you give it.
