A fish shop built around ready-to-cook seafood
Adam's Fish Shop is built on the idea of making seafood a staple in every home. It was founded in 2013 by chef patron Adam Demanuele, who had already made his name with the restaurant La Dolce Vita. He saw that Malta, surrounded by sea, had the raw material for gourmet seafood at home, and set out to change how people cook it by offering prepared seafood meals as well as raw fish. Today it is an award-winning gourmet fish shop and one of the more distinctive entries among the fish markets in Malta.
The shop is also the only one in Malta offering dry-aged fish, a technique more familiar from butchery, in which the fish is hung to concentrate flavour and firm the flesh. If you are planning a special dinner during a stay, it is worth asking what is available.
What you can buy
More than 300 products are on offer, and the fish and seafood come from carefully chosen producers, some of them organically farmed. The range is arranged in groups: antipasti and starters, fish and seafood, platters, ready meals and a children's range, quiches and pies, and a pasta, sauces and soups section that includes artisanal filled pasta, dry pasta, gluten-free pasta, sauces and soups. A gourmet store section covers olive oils, vinegar, rice, polenta, preserves, salted biscuits and salt, and there is an organic range.
Drinks are included too, with sparkling wine and champagne, white, rosé and red wines, and beers. That makes the shop a practical one-stop call if you are staying in a villa or apartment and want a proper dinner without spending the afternoon in the kitchen. Our Malta holidays overview has more on choosing where and when to travel.
Products can be bought for collection from the shop, and the shop sets out its aim as bringing the seafood dining experience to your home. Fish is fresh and quick to spoil, so buy it close to the time you plan to cook, and ask the team at the counter how to store it and how long it keeps. If you have an allergy or dietary need, such as gluten-free pasta, ask about ingredients before you order.
Catering for events and boats
Outside catering is a second strand of the business, with spring and summer catering menus for events. If you are marrying or celebrating in Malta, a good photographer is worth booking too, and wedding and event photographers are listed in our directory.
The shop also runs a boats and yachts catering service, aimed at the vessels that call at the islands. If you have chartered a boat, you can ask whether provisions can be arranged: see our listings for Aloha Boat Charters Malta and Adventure Cruises Malta, or browse Amazing Boat Trips Malta for a day on the water. The shop is listed with catering companies in Malta as well.
The team and the shop in Mosta
Adam Demanuele leads three seafood businesses, including The Seafood Market Grill and Seafood Street Food in Gżira, and has worked at Dolce Vita and at the Hilton. Steve Darmanin is the executive chef, with more than twenty years in kitchens that include Gleneagles Hotel in Scotland. Patrizio Cassar, the head chef, has worked in leading Maltese hotels and fish restaurants, and Milan Angdambe cleans fish and assists in the kitchen.
Mosta is known for its great domed church and sits close to the walled city in our Mdina guide, so the shop fits easily into a day of sightseeing. For a trip on the sea afterwards, read about the Blue Lagoon on Comino, or browse things to do in Malta.
