Atlas Insurance ranks among Malta's leading insurance groups, with roots going back more than a century and a network of offices and agents spread across the island and Gozo. Its head office sits on the Ta' Xbiex seafront, and its slogan, People you can trust, reflects a focus on personal service through local branches, live chat and around the clock emergency lines. For UK readers moving to Malta it is one of the obvious places to insure a car, a home or a family's health, and it appears in our directory of insurance providers in Malta.

A Maltese group with a long history

Atlas has operated for over 100 years. Its modern form dates from the late 1990s, when four family run insurance agencies joined forces as Atlas Insurance Agency, and today the flagship company is Atlas Insurance PCC Limited. By the end of 2025 the group served more than 129,000 customers, had settled over 78,000 claims and paid out more than €28 million that year, and its gross premium income had grown beyond €140 million across local and international business.

In 2006 Atlas began offering protected cell facilities, which let businesses write insurance within the EU through a ring fenced cell of Atlas Insurance PCC rather than setting up a full insurer of their own. Its staff also provide finance, compliance, IT, HR and marketing support to those cell clients. Our overview of Malta's financial services sector explains why the island attracts this kind of business.

Insurance for individuals and families

The personal range covers motor, travel (including annual multi trip policies), home and HomeLet for landlords letting property, pet, boat, health and dental, and life and pensions. Two newer products, iCycle and iScoot, insure bicycles and e-scooters, and each has its own claims route and set of frequently asked questions. Personal motor and home customers earn and redeem Lava Rewards points on their policies.

Help in a crisis is a strong point. Atlas RoadAssist runs 24 hours a day and comes free with every comprehensive motor policy, or at a reduced cost with other covers. HomeHelp, free with every HomePlan policy, provides emergency assistance at home, and a separate line arranges emergency hospital admission after hours for health clients. Newcomers sorting out a car and a home at the same time may find our UK guide to relocating to Malta useful alongside a quote.

Business cover and employee benefits

For companies, Atlas provides business insurance across a range of commercial risks, employee assistance programmes, and insurance management for clients using its protected cell services. Many of the people working on commercial accounts hold business degrees, and a growing number also have insurance qualifications, while risk management, health and safety and loss adjustment are common specialisms within the team.

The people behind Atlas

The group employs well over 250 people, a substantial number of them fellows or associates of the Chartered Insurance Institute in London, the professional body many UK readers will recognise. People are treated as the group's greatest asset, and values of integrity, honesty and fairness shape recruitment, which is open to school leavers, graduates and experienced professionals alike. Atlas also runs internships that rotate students through several departments with full training. It also sponsors local sport, including a partnership with Melita FC dating back to 2009 that was recently renewed for three more years, and a monthly Atlas Youth Athlete award.

Branches and how to get in touch

Alongside the Ta' Xbiex head office, Atlas runs 12 branches and works with 39 tied intermediaries throughout Malta and Gozo, so help is rarely far away. Branches include Mosta, Naxxar, St Paul's Bay and Rabat, close to the old capital described in our Mdina guide. Ta' Xbiex itself is a quiet waterfront district beside Gżira, a short walk from the hotels of Sliema and Gżira.

Live chat with the personal insurance team runs on weekdays and on Saturday mornings. If you would like a quote or have a question about cover, send a note through the VisitMalta.co.uk enquiry form on this page and we will pass it to Atlas Insurance for a direct reply.
