Floriana is the town you walk through just before reaching the City Gate of Valletta, and it is where Citadel Insurance keeps both its head office and a separate Customer Services office. The Customer Services office sits at 28 St Anne Street, the broad main road that runs towards the capital, and unlike the head office it also opens on Saturday mornings, which makes it handy if you work during the week.
Citadel Insurance p.l.c. is a Maltese insurer with policies for individuals, families and companies, from car and home cover to health, life and marine. On VisitMalta.co.uk it is listed in our directory of insurance companies and agents in Malta, alongside brokers and other insurers on the islands.
Cover for individuals and families
On the personal side, Citadel insures private cars, commercial vehicles and other motors, and offers buildings and contents cover for your own home, another property you own or a condominium. Life protection plans are designed either to look after your family or to back a bank loan, a common requirement when you buy property with a mortgage in Malta.
Health plans come in a range of options for you and the people close to you, and travel insurance covers trips abroad. There is also a dedicated wedding policy for the big day, and motor, home and travel cover can be bought online without visiting an office at all. If you are moving over from the UK and setting up a household, our guide to relocating to Malta explains the wider steps.
Boats, businesses and fleets
Marine policies cover motor boats, cabin cruisers, motor yachts and similar craft, which matters on islands where so many people keep a boat. Owners berthed in the harbours around Ta' Xbiex and Manoel Island, home of the Royal Malta Yacht Club, are only a few minutes from Floriana.
For companies there are packages for small and medium enterprises and for larger corporations, with specialist lines for schools, hotels, construction and engineering projects, liability, employee benefits and marine cargo. Motor fleet insurance is split into two products: one for fleets of up to 25 vehicles and one for anything larger. In October 2025 Citadel also agreed a corporate partnership with the Chamber of Engineers, giving its members access to tailored policies.
Regulation and the wider company
Citadel Insurance p.l.c., company registration number C21550, holds authorisation under Malta's Insurance Business Act, Cap. 403, to write both general and long term insurance, and it is regulated by the Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA), the island's counterpart to the FCA. Its policies are intended for risks situated in Malta, so they suit residents and property or assets based here rather than cover arranged from the UK. You can read more about how the sector works in our overview of financial services in Malta.
The company sums up its purpose as earning the trust of its customers, the community and its own people. In practice that has included staff training on anti-money laundering and countering terrorist financing, held at the Hotel Excelsior in November 2025, and gold sponsorship of the Delphi Alliance 2nd Global Conference in Malta in September 2025. Holders of active with-profits policies at the end of 2024 were granted a bonus of at least 3.0%.
