BNF Bank is a Maltese credit institution with its head office on Rue D'Argens in Gżira, licensed by the MFSA under the Banking Act 1994. It offers current and savings accounts, home and personal loans, Mastercard cards and business banking through 13 branches across Malta and Gozo plus a branch in London. You can contact the bank through the VisitMalta.co.uk enquiry form on this page.

BNF Bank is one of the banks Maltese households and businesses deal with every day, and its head office sits on Rue D'Argens in Gżira, a short walk uphill from the seafront facing Manoel Island. From there the bank runs a network of 13 high street branches across Malta and Gozo, a branch in London, a Corporate and Business Banking centre, a Treasury function and a customer care team that handles calls, live chat and secure messages.

For a UK reader the bank is relevant at two moments: when you first arrive and need a local account, and when you are ready to buy property or grow a business on the island. BNF covers both, with personal accounts, savings, home loans and cards on one side and commercial banking for small firms and larger companies on the other. You will find it in our directory of banks in Malta, and if you are weighing up a digital-first alternative, our page on MeDirect Bank sets out a different model.

Ownership, licence and recognition

BNF Bank p.l.c. is a credit institution registered in Malta under company number C 41030. It is licensed by the Malta Financial Services Authority to carry on the business of banking under the Banking Act 1994, and it takes part in the Depositor Compensation Scheme set up in Malta, the local equivalent of the protection UK savers know from the FSCS.

The majority shareholder, with 92.4% of the shares, is JUD Investment Group Ltd, part of Al Faisal International for Investment, one of the largest private diversified groups in Qatar. The other 7.6% belongs to four Maltese companies: PG Holdings Ltd, Virtu Investments Ltd, SAK Ltd and Mizzi Organisation Limited. That mix of international capital and local ownership sits behind a bank that aims to be the first choice for individuals and businesses while holding to firm ethical and social standards.

The Banker, published by the Financial Times, named BNF Bank of the Year Malta in 2020, 2021 and 2022. Its three stated values are ambition, responsibility and empathy, and it is a member of MESGA, the Malta ESG Alliance, a network of organisations working on sustainable and socially responsible practice. Readers who want the bigger picture of how banking fits into the island's economy can start with our overview of financial services in Malta.

Everyday accounts and savings

The core personal product is the Current Account for day-to-day banking. Newcomers who simply need somewhere to receive a salary and pay bills can open a Basic Payment Account, which is built to get people banking in Malta quickly. If you are still planning the move itself, our UK guide to relocating to Malta covers residence, housing and the paperwork that usually comes before opening an account.

For savers there is a standard Savings Account, a Fixed Term Account for money you can leave untouched, an Internet Banking Term Deposit you set up and manage online, and a Flexi Term Deposit that combines interest with more room to move. The Monthly Savings Scheme suits anyone putting aside a regular amount towards a goal. Families can open a New Generations Account for children, and the Student Package is designed for young people managing their own money for the first time.

Two salary packages bundle banking for people paid into BNF: the Salary Package and the Executive Salary Package, the latter aimed at higher earners. Current interest rates, tariffs and charges are published separately by the bank, so ask for the latest figures when you get in touch.

Home loans, personal loans and cards

Buying a home is where many people first sit down with a BNF relationship officer. The Home Loan is the bank's mortgage product for anyone taking the step towards owning property in Malta, and the bank is also listed among our mortgage advisors in Malta for that reason. Lending decisions and terms depend on your circumstances, so the first conversation is about what you want to buy and how you plan to fund it.

Smaller borrowing is covered by the Personal Loan for plans such as a car, a wedding or a renovation, and by an Overdraft that gives some extra headroom on a current account. The Green Personal Loan is reserved for environmentally friendly purchases and projects.

On cards, BNF issues a contactless Debit Card and two Mastercard credit cards: the Classic Credit Card for everyday spending and the Gold Credit Card with a higher specification. The bank also publishes a short guide to help you decide which card fits your lifestyle.

Banking for businesses of every size

Through its Commercial Banking arm BNF works with retailers, family-owned firms, small and medium-sized enterprises and larger corporate customers. The Corporate and Business offer brings together accounts, lending and day-to-day services for companies, while the Call Account gives businesses a simple way to manage surplus cash and liquidity.

Two products target smaller firms. Business Accelerate offers finance at low interest rates with minimal security requirements, which can help a growing company invest without pledging large assets, and Micro Business provides tailored banking for very small enterprises and sole traders. Companies with interests beyond Malta can use the International Banking Unit, and the London Branch provides commercial assistance to clients with links to the UK.

A new company normally needs its bank account soon after incorporation. If you have not yet formed yours, a corporate services firm such as Chetcuti Cauchi's company formation office can deal with that stage before you approach the bank.

Online banking, payments and security

eBNF is the bank's internet banking platform, now paired with a new eBNF Mobile App that replaced the earlier app. The app generates secure codes directly on your phone, so you no longer wait for an SMS when logging in or approving a payment. Instant mobile payments are available through the app, SEPA Outward Instant Payments let you send euro transfers across the Single Euro Payments Area within seconds, and Verification of Payee checks the name on the receiving account before money leaves.

Help is available through the website's live chat and virtual assistant, through secure messages inside eBNF, and from the customer care team. BNF repeatedly warns customers about vishing and smishing, the fraudulent calls and text messages that pose as the bank. It will never ask for your security details or send a link by SMS, and its only official web domain is bnf.bank, so treat anything else with suspicion.

Board and management

Day-to-day management is led by David Power, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer. He works with Nadia Miceli as Chief Financial Officer, Glen Smith as Chief Banking Officer, Shoua Liu as Chief Operations Officer, Daniel Cutajar as Chief Technology Officer and Tiziana Bugeja as Chief Risk Officer. In 2026 three team members were promoted to Area Heads within Retail Banking to strengthen leadership across the branch network.

In October 2026 the bank appointed Izzat Nuseibeh as Chairman, subject to regulatory approval, succeeding Michael Frendo. Mr Nuseibeh is a British national with more than four decades in corporate, private and institutional banking across Europe and the Middle East, including senior roles at Barclays, Credit Suisse, Bankers Trust and Deutsche Bank, and most recently as chief executive of BLOM Bank Qatar. Sheikh Jassim Feisal Q.F. Al-Thani is Deputy Chairman, and the other directors are Mario P. Galea, Moh'd Abdelqader Darwish Al-Ramahi, Tarik Mahmut, Charles Borg, Juanita Bencini and David Power.

Branches across Malta and Gozo

The 13 branches, each with ATMs and deposit machines, are in Attard, Campus Hub in Msida, Fgura, Mosta, Naxxar, Paola, Qormi at the Pavi Shopping Complex, Rabat, San Ġwann, Siġġiewi, St Julian's, St Paul's Bay and Victoria on Gozo, where the branch is on Republic Street. Rabat is the closest branch for anyone staying near the old capital, described in our Mdina guide, and visitors crossing to the sister island can read our Gozo guide.

Branches open at 9am every weekday and on Saturday, closing at 2pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and at 12.30pm on Wednesday and Saturday. Campus Hub and Qormi also open from 4pm to 7pm on Monday and Thursday evenings. Cashier service is not offered everywhere: Paola, Naxxar, San Ġwann, Rabat and Campus Hub currently work without a teller, St Julian's and Siġġiewi offer cashiers on weekday mornings until 12.30pm, and the remaining branches offer them from Monday to Saturday until 12.30pm.

Community, sport and volunteering

In October 2026 BNF became a Premium Partner of the Royal Malta Golf Club. The bank is now principal sponsor of the club's Junior Academy, which takes in more than 100 young golfers each season, supports the Happy Gilmores programme for beginners, and is sponsoring two new tournaments in the coming season.

Staff Volunteering Days, launched in June 2026, let employees spend time with a charity of their choice as part of their benefits. Teams have already helped at the Soup Kitchen OFM in the capital, which our Valletta guide introduces, at Noah's Ark Dog Sanctuary and at the Association for Abandoned Animals, and the bank plans to add more partners across both islands.
