IK Padel Malta is the company that introduced padel to the island. Padel is a racket sport played in doubles on an enclosed court with glass walls, using solid rackets and a depressurised ball, and it is easy to enjoy from your first game. IK Padel Malta now runs courts at several locations, mostly in the Gżira and Pembroke area close to Sliema and St Julian's, and it offers court hire, coaching and tournaments. It is listed in our directory of tennis and racket sports in Malta.

How IK Padel began

The company was founded by Ivana Kubickova and Neville Arpa, who built the first padel court in Malta at the Salini Resort in December 2019 under the IK Padel Malta brand. The court was an instant hit, with new players signing up every day.

From that start the number of IK Padel courts grew to more than twenty in just two years. The first four players took to the courts in 2021, and since then more than 3000 people have played on IK Padel courts. Around 70 per cent of the courts are in the Pembroke and Gżira area, and the range is opening up to Luqa and Paola. The company plans to keep investing in new and larger venues.

Where to play

There are five locations. The Salini Resort court in Salina, on a gentle slope in the north of the island, opened in December 2019 and was the first in Malta. Manoel Island in Gżira followed in December 2020, close to Sliema and Valletta, and is among Malta's most popular padel clubs.

In September 2021 the Luxol complex in Pembroke opened, on more than 1,500 square metres of land. The same month saw the opening of IK Padel Village at Pembroke Gardens, beneath three hotels and on more than 3000 square metres, set to be Malta's largest padel club. A court in Lija opened in February 2022, the first in the south of the island and close to the airport.

Locations have ample parking, so a court is usually a short drive from home. Visitors staying in the area can browse hotels in Sliema and St Julian's and our where to stay in Malta guide, then book a court by choosing a location and picking a slot, or by downloading the Playtomic app.

Coaching and the kids academy

The padel academy is a core part of the growth of the sport in Malta, with professional, experienced coaches who work with every level. You do not need to be a pro to join: lessons quickly improve ball feel, technique and understanding of how to use the glass walls. The team includes Davide Tortora, head coach and tournament organiser and the first padel coach on the island, and Santi Antonaya Labrador, who is also a head coach. Malena Rodriguez, a former Spanish champion, is the first world-class female padel coach in Malta, and Mauricio Muñoz has coached national teams to European and world championship success.

The kids academy offers a term from 5 October to 20 December, at Pembroke Gardens and Luxol. One lesson a week costs 215 euros, two lessons a week cost 415 euros and three lessons a week cost 595 euros, with one registration form for each child. Coaches also teach tennis, so families who play both sports can ask about either.

Tournaments, events and teams

The club runs more than 100 tournaments and events each year, and the website has a page to see programmes and sign up. A corporate brochure is available for companies planning team-building events on court, and subscribers to the newsletter receive event updates and a discount on the online shop.

Malta's long sunny season suits outdoor padel, and our Malta weather guide shows when to expect the best conditions. After a game, nearby services in our directory include Adventure Cruises Malta, AM Language and Ami's City Spa, Beauty and Hair Salon.
