Lija Tennis Club is a volunteer-run members' tennis club at the Lija Recreation Centre in central Malta, with a clubhouse, three coaching intakes a year and regular tournaments. Enquiries go through the VisitMalta.co.uk form on this page and we will pass them to the club.
Lija Tennis Club is a community club in the village of Lija, in the middle of Malta, run entirely by volunteers. It offers coaching clinics, organises tournaments through the year and gives members a clubhouse and a court of their own. The club is listed in our directory of tennis in Malta, and its published fees are modest.
History of the club
The Lija tennis court was built in the early 1990s, when the village football ground was converted into a multi-use recreation area. That area includes a smaller football pitch, a bocci pitch, swings and a children's play area, with space set aside for tennis. The first committee was formed in 1993 under the presidency of Dr Thomas Azzopardi.
Membership has grown steadily since then and now stands at over a hundred paid-up members. The legal title to the clubhouse passed to the club in 1999, and the building was extensively refurbished in 2010, with several new facilities and amenities added. The clubhouse is where the club's affairs are run.
The committee
A committee of volunteers keeps the club running. Its work covers maintaining the tennis court, organising tournaments throughout the year, running coaching clinics and looking after members. The 2026 to 2027 committee is led by Ms Helen Azzopardi as president, with Ms Moira Kuijt as vice president and safeguarding officer, Ms Lilian Riolo as secretary, Mr Tony Sant as vice secretary and integrity officer, Mr Tony Paris as treasurer, Mr Louis Tagliana as vice treasurer and Ms Bora Birigjaj as a committee member.
The fact that the club names a safeguarding officer and an integrity officer is reassuring for families whose children join the junior programme.
Coaching clinics
There are three coaching clinic intakes each year, usually held in February, July and October. Each intake is a series of 10 weekly sessions. On Saturdays there is a class for under-14s of all levels, and on Sundays there is an adult brush-up class that also takes teenagers. Each course costs €60 for 10 sessions.
To apply, download the application form from the club's website, complete it and hand it in at the club office on Fridays at 6:00pm, with payment. The club then reviews the application and confirms the start date of your lessons. The intakes make it easy for holidaymakers to plan, although the timing suits residents and longer stays better than a one-week break.
Membership
The club offers programmes for every level, from beginner to advanced, and members can take part in the tournaments and special events held through the year, which are also a friendly way to meet new people. Annual membership is priced by category: under-18 members pay €10 when they join and €15 to renew, over-18 members pay €20 to join and €25 to renew, and a family membership is €30 to join and €35 to renew.
You can apply by completing the form at the club during Friday opening hours, or by downloading it and handing it in. Payment is by cheque made payable to Lija Tennis Club. If you are moving to Malta, our relocation guide for UK residents explains more of the practical steps, and a local club is a good way to put down roots.
