A Maltese insurer with a long history

The story begins in 1965, when British American Insurance was established in Malta. In 1995 the business became GlobalCapital p.l.c., and in 2001 its ordinary shares were listed on the Malta Stock Exchange. In 2003 the regulator authorised a Class I licence for life and annuity business, and in 2007 a Class III licence for linked long-term business. Investar became majority shareholder of the group in 2016, a restructuring followed in 2018, and the company rebranded as LifeStar in 2020.

In 2021 LifeStar Insurance plc became a listed entity through a share offering and a subordinated bond issue, and in 2025 the company marked sixty years of service. It forms part of LifeStar Holding plc, whose board includes Chairman Prof. Paolo Catalfamo. The group also works in Italy and San Marino, alongside its Maltese business. Our overview of financial services in Malta puts the sector in context.

Protection, savings and retirement plans

Protection plans provide financial security for loved ones if the worst happens. Savings and investment products are aimed at building capital over time, and the company's investment approach aims to preserve capital and keep money accessible while seeking returns.

For retirement, LifeStar offers PENSION Plus and PENSION Pro. The range also includes the Cancer Care Plan and the Real Life Plan, a universal life product. Each policy has its own terms, so ask for the policy wording and illustrations before deciding.

Health insurance through Bupa

Health cover is provided through LifeStar Health Ltd, which has been the country representative for Bupa in Malta since 1971. Bupa is an international health insurance group. The company offers the plans and handles the local service, and for the policy terms you should rely on the documents you receive when you apply.

The business sells through a large network of tied insurance intermediaries, meaning agents who work with the company directly, and it has moved to electronic policy issuance, digital signatures and paperless processes, which helps clients who live partly overseas.
