MITeK Ltd is a marine consultancy for the shipping and yachting industries, with its head office in St Julian's and a second office in Italy. It has worked as an international marine and cargo survey company since 2017, and was set up by a group of engineers who had spent years in shipping, offshore work and the oil and gas industry. Its work runs from engineering design through to hands-on inspection.

This is a business-to-business firm rather than a consumer service, but it is relevant to yacht owners, shipowners and anyone planning to register a vessel in Malta. VisitMalta.co.uk lists it in our directory of corporate services in Malta, alongside the firms that support companies based on the islands.

Who works at MITeK

The team is multidisciplinary. It includes naval architects, mechanical engineers, electrical and electronic engineers, master mariners and chief engineers, so a client can get both theoretical engineering knowledge and practical seagoing experience. The approach is friendly but professional and flexible, with staff trained on new maritime regulations and equipment, and surveyors and engineers monitored closely so standards stay high.

The firm works around the clock when needed, can operate in confined spaces and multicultural settings, and aims to prepare transparent, factual and impartial reports. Over the past decade it has delivered projects in marine, offshore, dredging and LNG sectors for clients in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Europe, North America and Australia, supported by a network of collaborators in Europe, Singapore, Hong Kong and China.

Surveys, inspections and certification

The core of the business is survey work. MITeK has been appointed as a Government Surveyor of Ships by Transport Malta, and it carries out general vessel inspections and ship surveys across many vessel types. It also provides yacht inspections, underwriter and P&I surveys, which assess a vessel for insurers, and incident work such as damage evaluation and investigation. If you are arranging cover for a boat, AIB Insurance Brokers Limited is one local option in our directory.

Its hazardous materials specialists are certified by DNV GL and carry out Inventory of Hazardous Materials surveys, which are needed to obtain the International Certificate on Inventory of Hazardous Materials and the International Ready for Recycling Certificate. For vessels that use dynamic positioning, the team provides specialist services to support and optimise those systems. Marine warranty surveys, shipyard supervision and maritime cyber security complete the survey side.

Ship recycling support

MITeK manages ship recycling from start to finish. It selects a suitable yard, working only with yards on the EU Ship Recycling Facility List, and prepares a towing plan and towing manual for safe transport. It handles flag decommissioning and export paperwork, develops or updates the Inventory of Hazardous Materials, prepares the Ship Recycling Plan with the chosen yard, and supervises the work on site. A final Owner's Audit Report shows that the recycling was done responsibly.

The aim is to help shipowners meet the EU Ship Recycling Regulation and the Hong Kong International Convention. Photographs on the company's recycling page show old vessels and equipment of the kind it handles.

Yachts, design and engineering

For yacht owners the useful services are Malta yacht registration and yacht inspections, delivered with competence and enthusiasm. It also offers marine electrical design for the electrical and automation systems that run a modern vessel, and ship design for energy-efficient, fully integrated vessels and offshore structures. Our financial services guide and corporate tax structure guide explain the wider Maltese framework, and CLA Malta, our featured partner, handles company and maritime structures from the legal side.

Moving a business to Malta is a project in itself, and our relocation guide is a good place to start. Financial and business advisers such as AE Business Advisors and Apex Group (Malta) are listed nearby. For context on the harbours where much of this work happens, see our Three Cities guide and the Valletta guide.
