MMK Studio is an architecture and design practice in St Julian's, on the north-east coast of Malta. The name is made up of its three founders: Mark, Mel and Kurt. They met as architecture graduates from the University of Malta, carried on working together after their studies and eventually launched the studio. You will find it in our directory of architects in Malta.
The studio describes its method as a careful reading of place, light and material, with the aim of creating spaces that feel contemporary yet lasting. For UK readers planning a home, a renovation or a commercial fit-out on the islands, that gives a clear sense of the tone: considered, calm and rooted in the site.
Who the studio is and how it thinks
The three partners are driven by the idea of creating more meaningful spaces. They hold that good architecture should be open to everyone, so they shape solutions around the expectations and budget of each client rather than a single template. They also treat the interior and the outer shell as one design, planned together from the start, and they are willing to take non-traditional routes in technical and operational procedure to reach the result they want.
Detail matters to them, but architecture is never an end in itself. The focus stays on the client, the context, the solution and how efficiently the project reaches its goals. The work is personalised enough that the partners put their own names on it.
Residential and commercial projects
The portfolio is divided into residential and commercial work. The latest project, Villa Kola, completed in 2026, replaced a 1980s semi-detached house in the central region with a new home for a family of five. Privacy shaped the plan, so daylight reaches the heart of the house through a first-floor internal courtyard suspended above a double-height space, while a sunken courtyard brings light and air to a steel-clad wine cellar in the basement. The ground floor opens onto a rear garden with a mature olive tree, with a tall fair-faced concrete wall set against full-height glass.
Other residential projects include a block of apartments called Gospa (2025), a restored and extended 1950s townhouse in Senglea (2020), a hidden property more than a century old called Dar Moħbija (2018), a light-filled duplex penthouse at Xemxija (2020) and a house within an alley called Six Alley 3 (2021). On the commercial and quieter side, the studio has designed Harlequin (2023), an intimate dining space within four vaulted boathouses, an artist's studio (2025) and a private chapel for prayer and meditation (2025).
On Villa Kola the studio provided architecture, interiors and structural engineering itself, working with outside specialists for styling and landscaping. That joined-up role can simplify things for an overseas client who would rather deal with one team.
Building in a place with centuries of stone
Malta rewards architects who respect what is already there. Restoring an old townhouse in Senglea, as the studio has done, means working among the same fortified streets that visitors explore in our Three Cities guide and Vittoriosa guide. The lanes covered in our Valletta guide and the walled city described in our Mdina guide show the island's limestone tradition at its best, and the story behind them is told in our guide to the Knights of Malta.
Climate is the other constant. Bright summers and cooler, wetter winters make courtyards, shaded terraces and cross-ventilation more than decoration, and our Malta weather guide explains why. Several of the studio's projects use courtyards and planting to bring light and air deep inside the building.
Visiting, moving and starting a project
The studio is at 51 Triq Ċensu Tabone in St Julian's, a lively seaside town that is easy to reach from most of the north and centre of the island. Opening hours and fees are not published, so the best approach is to explain what you have in mind and let the partners advise on how to proceed.
If you are relocating from Britain, our Malta relocation guide sets out the practical side of settling in, and about Malta gives a broader introduction. A site visit can double as a short break, and our guide to things to do in Malta will help you plan one.
To describe your project, use the VisitMalta.co.uk enquiry form on this page and we will pass your message to the studio.
