A school started by parents

San Anton opened in 1988 at Villa San Anton in Attard. A group of parents set up a non-profit school that would put the child at the centre of learning, and it became the original school of the Parents Foundation for Education. Within two years it moved to its current purpose-built premises at l-Imselliet. Its founders recall it as a collaborative project that changed the educational landscape of the island.

The school describes itself as the first in Malta to deliver holistic learning, coupling academic work with independent thinking and the ability to express one’s views. It blends traditional and progressive teaching, and as a mixed-ability school it aims to include children with varied abilities so that no child is left behind. Its mission puts teaching and learning first, through a broad curriculum, a bilingual approach and effective teaching methods.

Day care, early years, junior and senior sectors

The Day Care Centre offers a warm, safe place for infants and toddlers to mix with their peers. The Early Years Experience encourages children to pursue their own development in a nurturing setting. The Junior Sector uses a thematic approach that keeps the child at the centre of lessons, and the Senior Sector prepares students for further education, provides career guidance and offers a wide range of subjects across a broad-based curriculum.

Beyond lessons, programmes cover outdoor education, expressive arts, digital learning, sport, emotional wellbeing and diverse learning. There is also L-Isfida Msella, a community social engagement programme, and a section of the website for former students, the Old Antonians. Chaplains serve the early years and junior sectors and the senior sector, and school nurses and sector administrators support daily life. Teachers are fully qualified and warranted professionals, and professional development is part of staff life, with a mix of long-serving colleagues with newer arrivals.
