St Augustine College is a Catholic school for boys, run by the Maltese Augustinian Province and spread across two campuses: a secondary campus on Gwardamangia Hill in Pietà, close to Valletta, and a primary campus in Marsa. Together they teach around 792 boys from Year 1 to Year 11, supported by 185 staff and a curriculum of 38 subjects. The college is listed in our directory of international schools in Malta, and it is a good fit for families who want a faith-based boys' education with a long record.
History: from Valletta in 1848
The story begins in 1848, when Augustinian friars opened a school beside the church dedicated to St Augustine in Valletta, offering free Catholic schooling to local boys. It closed temporarily during the Second World War, reopened in 1948 on its hundredth anniversary, moved to larger premises in Tarxien in 1954, and settled in Pietà in the 1960s, where the school building was inaugurated in 1966. The Marsa primary campus came later.
If you are visiting the capital, our Valletta guide describes the city where the school began, and our guide to the Knights of Malta explains the wider religious history of the islands.
Ethos and Augustinian values
The college aims to combine academic excellence with firm moral and spiritual convictions, within a warm and caring setting. Its values come from the tradition of St Augustine of Hippo and include love, humility, devotion to study, the pursuit of truth, community, generous service, friendship and prayer. The school calls itself a loving, caring, inclusive community that believes in each person's potential to improve and excel.
An Augustinian education tries to balance humanities and sciences, career-oriented and spiritual learning, and personal and interpersonal growth. Pastoral care for students, parents and staff is central to how the college sees itself, and pupils are encouraged to take responsibility for their own behaviour. A wall at the school carries the words A community in search of truth.
The two campuses and the school day
The primary campus in Marsa welcomes boys in the first six years, and they continue to the secondary campus in Pietà for Years 7 to 11. On the primary campus the school day is 8:30am to 2:30pm, with the gates open from 7:30am. On the secondary campus lessons run from 7:40am to 2pm, and the gates open at 6:30am.
The school's calendar includes concerts for the primary years, such as a spring musical programme and Christmas productions, and the boys take part in charity drives and community projects. Parents contribute through the Parent-Teacher Association, which organises meetings, fundraising, workshops and volunteer programmes, and they help with cultural events, drama, sports days, sustainability projects and Erasmus+ initiatives.
Questions worth asking
The college's website is concise, so it helps to bring a short list of questions. Ask which year groups have places, how the move from the primary to the secondary campus works, how the school supports boys who arrive from the English or Scottish systems partway through a year, and what the uniform, transport and activity arrangements are. If your son has particular learning needs, say so in your first message so that the school can respond properly.
Because the college is a Catholic school with prayer and religious education built into school life, families from other backgrounds should also ask how this works in practice before applying.
