Qawra: Home to the Malta National Aquarium

Qawra occupies the rocky headland at the far edge of St Paul's Bay, sharing its resort identity with neighbouring Buġibba but carrying a slightly quieter, more residential character of its own. The History of Qawra

Long before that, the headland had strategic value: Qawra Tower, built in 1638 under Grand Master Lascaris, formed part of a chain of coastal watchtowers the Knights of St John used to warn of approaching threats, communicating with towers on Gozo and passing signals back to headquarters at Valletta. The area's archaeological record runs deeper still, with a Neolithic dolmen preserved on the grounds of a modern hotel and Roman remains discovered nearby — a reminder that this quiet resort headland has been watched, settled and fortified for thousands of years before the first sunbed appeared.

What to See in Qawra

The Malta National Aquarium is Qawra's headline attraction, a striking starfish-shaped building on the headland that opened in 2013 and remains one of the most polished family attractions on the island, with a walk-through shark tunnel and Mediterranean reef displays. Qawra Tower still stands at the tip of the peninsula, its old battery now home to a well-established restaurant, sharing the headland with its much larger modern neighbour. The rocky coastline around the tower offers some of the clearest swimming water in the area, and a coastal walk here takes in panoramic views across St Paul's Bay. Ghallis Tower, another Knights-era watchtower completed in 1659, looks back at Qawra from across Salina Bay, part of the same historic communication chain.

Food and Dining in Qawra

Qawra's restaurants cluster mainly around the aquarium and headland area, with a good spread of seafood restaurants making the most of the coastal setting. The old Qawra Tower battery, now the Ta' Fra Ben restaurant and pool, is a distinctive spot to combine a swim with a meal in a genuinely historic building. For a wider choice, Buġibba's promenade and Bay Square are only a short walk around the coast.

As a modern resort area rather than a historic parish village, Qawra's calendar centres more on organised tourist activities and seasonal events than traditional religious festas, with the Qawra Parish Church serving the area's growing resident population. Nearby St Paul's Bay proper and the wider Cottonera and Valletta areas remain the better destinations for visitors seeking a traditional Maltese festa experience, while Qawra itself focuses on family entertainment, boat trips and coastal activities throughout the summer season.

Getting to Qawra

Bus routes 49 and 186 connect Valletta to the St Paul's Bay area, including Qawra, taking around 45 to 55 minutes. From Malta International Airport, connect via Valletta or take a direct taxi, typically around 30 to 40 minutes. Qawra sits an easy walk around the headland from Buġibba, so the two are naturally combined on the same visit, and the Gozo ferry terminal at Ċirkewwa is roughly 15 minutes further along the coast.

Best Time to Visit Qawra

Summer brings the warmest sea temperatures for swimming off Qawra's rocky coastline and the busiest atmosphere around the aquarium and headland. Spring and autumn offer quieter, more comfortable conditions for coastal walks and visiting the aquarium without peak-season crowds. Winter is notably calmer, with rougher seas along the exposed headland, making it better suited to those visiting primarily for the aquarium rather than the coastline itself.
