Eating out in Żebbuġ, Gozo
Żebbuġ is a village in the north west of Gozo, near Għarb and Għasri, spread over two hilltop plateaus. Its council area also takes in the seaside resort of Marsalforn, which is why many of the restaurants on this page are by the sea rather than in the village itself.
That gives you two different ways to eat. Up in the village, things are quiet and local, with views over the countryside. Down in Marsalforn, restaurants line the bay and the promenade and suit a long seafood lunch or a summer evening.
Gozitan food is worth seeking out: ġbejniet cheeses, Gozitan ftira, fish soup such as aljotta and, in season, lampuki pie.
Restaurants in Żebbuġ and Marsalforn
In Marsalforn, Arzella on Triq il-Menqa serves seafood, L'Aragosta Local Kitchen on Marina Street has a Mediterranean menu, and Cardamom on Triq il-Wied serves Indian food. Kartell is listed for seafood and Mediterranean cooking.
In the village, The View Bar and Kitchen is on Pjazza l-Assunta, the square by the parish church, with a Mediterranean menu.
You will also find Horizon for Maltese and Mediterranean food, Otters Bistro and Pebbles for Mediterranean dishes, The Pierre's for Italian food and BoThai Restaurant for Thai cooking.
As in other Gozo seaside spots, menus and opening days can change with the season, so check each restaurant's page before you set off.
When to go
The village festa honours the Assumption of Mary and is held on the Sunday after 15 August, so mid August is lively across the area. In Marsalforn, the church of St Paul's Shipwreck celebrates on 10 February.
Summer is the busy season in Marsalforn, when booking ahead for dinner is wise. Winter is far quieter, and some seaside restaurants close or reduce their hours.
Lunch in the village with a view, followed by a swim and dinner by the bay, makes a good Gozo day.
Getting there and what to see
Take the ferry from Ċirkewwa to Mġarr, then drive or take a bus across Gozo. Żebbuġ is north west of Victoria, and Marsalforn sits below it on the coast.
The parish church of the Assumption, established in 1688, is decorated inside with local banded calcite, known in the village as alabaster or onyx, first found here in 1738. See our Żebbuġ, Gozo guide, our Marsalforn guide and our Gozo beaches guide for nearby swimming.
Practical tips for eating out in Żebbuġ and Marsalforn
Plan your meal around the ferry timetable. If you are on a day trip, leave enough time after dinner to get back to Mġarr for your crossing, especially out of season when sailings may be less frequent. Check the operator's timetable on the day.
Malta uses the euro, and English is one of the country's two official languages, so menus and conversations are easy for UK visitors. Cards are widely accepted, but carry a little cash for smaller cafés and kiosks, and check whether service is already included on the bill before adding a tip.
Dress is casual in Marsalforn, though it is polite to cover up from the beach before sitting down to eat. Parking near the bay fills quickly on summer evenings, so arrive early. Tell staff about allergies or dietary needs when you order.
