Buttigieg Insurance Brokers Ltd is a long-established, family-run insurance broker in the south-east of Malta. Its head office is on Zabbar Road in Fgura, and a branch on Naxxar Road in Birkirkara serves the centre of the island. The firm offers a competitive, no obligation quote for personal and commercial policies, and puts the client's requirements first. Fgura sits close to the Three Cities of Birgu, Senglea and Cospicua and a short drive from the Hypogeum at Ħal Saflieni, so it is easy to combine a visit with sightseeing.

As a broker, Buttigieg is not tied to one insurer. It advises on the basis of a fair analysis of the market and is licensed by the Malta Financial Services Authority to carry on insurance broking under the Insurance Intermediaries Act 2006.

History and ownership

The business was started in 1979 by the late Major Joseph Buttigieg Senior, who served in the Malta Police Force from 1950 until 1979. The limited liability company was formed on 17 November 1981, and he was chairman until he retired. His sons Paul and Joseph Buttigieg Junior took over the running of the firm and continue to lead it.

In 2011 two further directors were appointed, Emanuela Buttigieg and Jean Paul Buttigieg. Both hold the ACII qualification of the Chartered Insurance Institute in the UK and later gained its Chartered Insurance Broker status, and both hold broker licences from the MFSA. Kevin Brincat, who holds the Dip CII, is a named contact at the Birkirkara branch.

Personal insurance

The personal range covers car insurance, home insurance, health insurance, travel insurance and boat insurance. Motor cover is available through computer links with nine insurers and agencies, which lets the broker check terms and prepare quotations with each of them. Home and travel cover are available through the same links, and marine insurance is arranged through GasanMamo Insurance.

Commercial insurance and landlords

For business customers there is business insurance, landlord insurance, personal liability and condominium insurance. Elmo Insurance is linked for motor and SME business, while GasanMamo handles motor, travel, home, marine and commercial business. Landlords and owners of apartment blocks can ask about the policies that suit rented property and shared buildings, and company owners can ask about liability and business cover. Buttigieg has computer link arrangements with Atlas Insurance for motor and travel, Argus Insurance Agencies for motor and home, Citadel Insurance for motor and travel, Elmo Insurance for motor and SME, and England Insurance Agency, which acts for Mapfre Middlesea, for motor and travel. It also has links with GasanMamo Insurance, Laferla Insurance Agency, Mapfre Middlesea and Thomas Smith Insurance Agency. The firm is not under a contractual obligation to work exclusively with any insurer, so its advice rests on comparing what the market offers rather than promoting one company's products. That independence is the main reason to use a broker rather than going straight to an insurer, and it applies to motor, home, travel and commercial policies alike.

Offices and opening hours

The head office is at 211 to 213 Zabbar Road, Fgura FGR1010. It opens Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm, and on the last Saturday of each month from 8am to noon. The Birkirkara branch, opened on 15 July 1991, is at 87 Naxxar Road, BKR9047. In winter it is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm, with Wednesday closing at 1pm. In July and August it opens Monday to Friday from 8am to 4pm and on Wednesday closes at noon.
