COMTEC

COMTEC Pest Control is a pest control business listed in Paola that combines two things: professional treatments you can book online, and a shop of products for people who prefer to deal with a problem themselves. Its online store serves Malta and Gozo and focuses on cockroaches, ants, rodents, woodworm, flying insects and birds.

For UK readers who own or rent a property on the islands, this is a practical combination. A holiday let, a flat bought off plan or a business unit can be treated by a professional, while smaller issues can be handled with a kit delivered to the door.

Booking a treatment

The website has a Book Online page. Residential pest control is listed as starting from €55, with a Book Now option, and commercial pest control starts from €70 with a request to book. Those are starting prices, so the final cost depends on the job; ask when you enquire.

If an urgent problem cannot be fitted into the available booking dates, the better route is buying one of its DIY combos from the online store as a stop gap. That is a sensible approach for something like a sudden cockroach problem at the start of a rental period.

The online shop

The shop is organised into categories: air fragrance and refills, ant control, anti bacterial and disinfectant products, bird control, common crawling insect control, flies, mosquitoes and moth control, rodent control and woodworm control, plus a special collection and offers. The products are described in detail, including the target insects, the active ingredient and how to apply them.

The Roach Eradicator kits are among the best sellers. The Cyperkill version is on sale at €58.95 and the Deltrinate version at €60.00. Each is a complete anti cockroach set with a 5 litre bottle of residual insecticide, a 2 litre hand pump and a pack of four bait stations. Cyperkill is intended for crawling insects including American cockroaches, ants, fleas, centipedes and woodlice, and is applied as a coarse spray around the edges of rooms, into cracks and crevices and around the outside of the building.

The directions advise leaving treated floors for 48 hours before washing them, keeping people and animals away until surfaces are dry, and rinsing the pump after use. The product has a shelf life of eight months from the date of production. Bait stations contain imidacloprid gel, which cockroaches carry back to their nests, and the bait stays active for at least two months under normal conditions.

Ant products target Pharaoh ants and Argentine ants. Four pre baited ant stations cost €35.00, and combinations with gel and reusable stations are also sold. Orders over €50 qualify for free delivery.

Which pests and when

The shop treats cockroaches as its main line, with products aimed at German and Oriental cockroaches as well as American ones. Ants, fleas, flies, mosquitoes, woodworm and rodents are covered by other products.

Warm weather increases insect activity, and our Malta weather guide explains how long summer runs. If you are moving into a new home, our Malta relocation guide gives a sense of what to organise first, and our guide on where to stay in Malta helps you choose an area.

Paola and the area

Paola lies south east of Valletta, close to the Grand Harbour and the Three Cities. It is best known to visitors for the Hypogeum of Ħal Saflieni, an underground prehistoric burial complex. Our Three Cities guide covers the fortified towns on the other side of the harbour, and the Valletta guide describes the capital, a short drive away.

Gozo customers are served by delivery, so the Gozo guide is the place to start if you are staying on the sister island. The things to do in Malta page offers ideas for the rest of your trip.
