Elmo Insurance is an insurer with deep roots on the island, and its head office stands on Triq l-Abate Rigord in Ta' Xbiex, beside Gżira. From there it runs a network of nine branches and a group of tied insurance intermediaries across Malta and Gozo, so a motorist in Paola, a shop owner in Mellieħa and a yacht owner moored on the coast can all reach a local office.
Elmo is licensed to underwrite every class of non-life insurance, which includes health insurance. It is listed in our directory of insurance in Malta, and the sections below set out what it sells, how it came about and where to find it.
History and ownership of the business
The business began as Elmo Insurance Agency Limited in 1981, created by combining the Malta agencies of three well-known British insurers. Two Maltese firms, C&H Bartoli and Cassar & Cooper, had represented the Sun Alliance and London group since as far back as 1939. When Royal & Sun Alliance withdrew from Malta for global reasons, its portfolio of risks passed to Elmo Insurance Limited on 1 May 2004.
Today the company employs more than 100 people, many of them fellows and associates of the Chartered Insurance Institute of London, alongside colleagues with business, financial, IT, legal and marketing qualifications. It works with Swiss Re and other international reinsurers, and with RSA Global, Allianz Global and QBE Global. Its board is chaired by William Harding, with David Bartoli as managing director.
Cover for individuals
Personal cover includes motor, boat, home, health and travel insurance, with a choice of payment options. Car owners can request a quote, buy a policy and renew it online, and a payment options page sets out how premiums can be settled. If you are bringing a vehicle or buying one after a move, our Malta relocation guide covers the wider arrangements.
The yacht and pleasure craft policy is of interest to boat owners who moor around the island, and health insurance gives access to treatment after illness or injury. Home policies protect the building and its contents, and travel policies are offered for both occasional and frequent travellers. For a view of how another local intermediary approaches cover, see AIB Insurance Brokers, also in our directory.
Cover for businesses
Commercial insurance covers cargo, commercial vehicles, construction and engineering projects, large commercial and industrial risks, and small and medium enterprises. These lines suit importers, builders, contractors and shopkeepers who need to protect stock, vehicles and sites. Owners setting up in Malta may also want to read our overview of financial services in Malta for context on the regulated sector.
Claims for motor insurance have their own section of the website, and a complaints procedure with a complaints form is available for customers who are not satisfied with the service they receive.
Branches across Malta and Gozo
Besides the head office in Ta' Xbiex, Elmo has branches in Birkirkara, Cospicua, Paola, Qormi, Rabat, St Paul's Bay, Żebbuġ, Swieqi and Mellieħa. Each branch has its own address and hours, including summer timetables for July to September in several towns. Cospicua is part of the Three Cities guide area, Rabat sits beside Mdina, covered in our Mdina guide and Mellieħa has its own guide to the resort, so a visit can fit into a day of sightseeing.
Tied insurance intermediaries, many of them linked to garages and motor dealers, extend the network further, including one in Victoria on Gozo. Our Gozo guide helps with planning a trip to the sister island.
