Express Fitness Club is a gym with an indoor heated pool, jacuzzi and sauna on Andrew Cunningham Street in San Pawl il-Baħar (St Paul's Bay), in the north of Malta. It offers day passes through to annual memberships, with personal training and nutrition advice available. Send your enquiry through the VisitMalta.co.uk form on this page and we will pass it to the club.

Express Fitness Club is a independent gym in San Pawl il-Baħar, the bay-side town on Malta's north coast that most UK visitors know as St Paul's Bay. It is aimed at people who want a proper training space and a pool under one roof, whether that means a week of holiday workouts or a year-round routine as a resident. The club is based in the Soreda Hotel building, so it is easy to find for anyone staying in the Bugibba, Qawra and St Paul's Bay area, and it is listed among our gyms in Malta.

Day passes, weekly passes and longer memberships are all on the price list, which makes it practical for short stays as well as for people who have moved to the island. If you are weighing up where to base yourself in the north, our guide to where to stay in Malta explains how the resorts compare.

Who runs the club

Eric Schembri runs Express Fitness Club. He has more than three decades in the fitness world and is listed as the club's director, an IFBB athlete, an international judge, a personal trainer and a prep coach and diet consultant. He leads a small team of gym attendants, one of whom is also an IFBB athlete and personal trainer.

The tone is friendly and professional rather than corporate, and the aim is a first-class training experience at competitive prices. The team is small and describes its aim as helping members with friendly, customer-focused support.

The gym and pool

The main gym is fitted with free weights, strength machines and cardiovascular equipment, and the kit is upgraded regularly. Free weights run from very light dumbbells for beginners and older members to heavy loads for experienced lifters, so one room works for very different abilities.

What sets the club apart from a typical high-street gym is the water. An indoor heated pool, a jacuzzi and a sauna sit alongside the training floor, which is welcome after a long session or on a day when the weather is not suited to the beach. If you are planning outdoor time as well, our Malta weather guide shows what to expect month by month. A selection of supplements is on display for sale, and general nutrition advice is given free of charge, with individual consultations offered for an extra fee.

Personal training is available at an additional fee. Facial, eye, waxing and slimming treatments and massage have been part of the club's offer in the past, but they are not offered at present, so ask before you plan around them.

Memberships and prices

There are two packages. The Basic Package includes the pool, jacuzzi, sauna, showers and lockers: €12 for a day, €40 for a month, €95 for three months, €145 for six months and €190 for a year. Couples pay €170, €260 and €340 for three months, six months and a year respectively. Children aged 6 to 14 pay €8, and the pool is open from 8:00am to 9:00pm.

The All Inclusive Package covers the gym, showers, lockers, sauna and heated pool. A day costs €10 for the gym only or €15 for gym and pool, a week €25, two weeks €35 and a month €50. Three months costs €135, six months €185 and a year €290, with couple and plus-three rates for the longer terms. Students and seniors with a valid card receive 10% off a yearly membership, and one-year renewals are discounted by 10%. Discounts cannot be combined with other offers.

A fortnight pass is a sensible choice for a two-week holiday, while a month suits people on a longer stay or a working trip. Visitors who want to combine training with sightseeing will find plenty to plan around in our guide to things to do in Malta.

Around San Pawl il-Baħar

The club sits in one of the busiest holiday areas on the island, with bars, restaurants and the seafront promenade close by. Many guests pair their training with a boat trip or a dive, and the directory includes Abyss Diving Club in Bugibba and Amazing Boat Trips Malta, both a short distance away.

For beach days, our list of the best beaches in Malta and the guide to Golden Bay cover the nearest sand, while our Mellieħa guide and Popeye Village are an easy drive north. If you would rather book a hotel in the area first, see hotels in Qawra and St Paul's Bay.

To ask about a pass, a membership or personal training, use the VisitMalta.co.uk enquiry form on this page and we will pass your message on to the club.
