FinanceMalta is the body that speaks for Malta's financial services industry. It is a non-profit public-private initiative created in 2007, just as Malta joined the Eurozone, to promote the country as an international business and financial centre both at home and abroad. It works with industry and government to keep Malta's legal, regulatory and tax framework modern and effective for the financial services and fintech sectors.
FinanceMalta is not a bank, adviser or mortgage broker, so it does not arrange loans or home finance. We list it in our directory of mortgage advisors in Malta because UK readers who are exploring finance in Malta often start by understanding how the sector is organised, and this is the organisation that explains it.
Who set it up and who runs it
The initiative was founded by the Government of Malta together with the associations that represent banking, insurance and funds, and the Institute of Financial Services Practitioners. Those associations are the Malta Bankers' Association, the Malta Insurance Association, the Malta Asset Servicing Association and the Association of Insurance Brokers.
Its Board of Governors is split equally between the private sector and government. George Vella chairs the board, Matthew Bianchi is vice-chairman and represents insurance, and the remaining governors speak for funds and asset servicing, banking, financial services practitioners and government. Day to day the team is led by Dr Bernice Buttigieg as Chief Strategy Officer, with administrative and marketing colleagues. FinanceMalta is also a member of the World Alliance of International Financial Centers and the EU Roundtable of Financial Centres.
The sectors it covers
The website organises its guidance by sector: insurance and reinsurance, family offices and private wealth, investment funds and asset management, sustainable finance, aviation, capital markets, credit and financial institutions, fintech, legal advisory and wealth management. Malta's industry is built mainly on asset management, funds, insurance, private wealth and corporate services, with fintech, blockchain, e-payments, aviation, yachting and maritime services added in recent years.
The case it makes for Malta is a trained workforce, a low-cost environment, English as an official language, a favourable tax system backed by more than 70 double taxation agreements, modern communications infrastructure and a strategic position in the Mediterranean. Our Malta financial services guide and corporate tax structure guide give you the same picture from the point of view of a UK business or investor.
Reports, podcasts and events
FinanceMalta publishes annual reports, a benchmarking summary of Malta's capital markets, a family office brochure and sector brochures, along with news, newsletters and industry updates. Its podcast, The #FinTalks, features guests from member organisations and has covered subjects such as taxation in Malta, fiduciary duty for directors, embedded finance and Malta's fintech future.
The main event in the calendar is the Finance Malta Conference 2026, called Financing the Next Generation Economy, on 11 and 12 November 2026 at the Hilton Malta. Events run by members also appear in the calendar, such as sessions on the EU anti-money laundering package and the Malta Asset Management Forum. A mini directory of business services links to official bodies such as the Malta Business Registry, the Malta Financial Services Authority, Malta Enterprise, Residency Malta Agency and Start in Malta, which is useful for anyone setting up in the country.
Finding help in the directory
FinanceMalta itself publishes information rather than advice, so most UK readers will want a practitioner as well. In our directory you can look at Alecta Advisors for mortgage advice, Apex Group (Malta) and AE Business Advisors for financial advice, and AIB Insurance Brokers Limited for insurance.
If you are planning a move, our guide to relocating to Malta and Malta tax guide for UK nationals are good companions, and our featured partner CLA Malta covers company, tax and relocation services. To contact FinanceMalta, use the VisitMalta.co.uk enquiry form on this page and we will pass your message to the organisation.
