Ilona and the studio's story
The studio is led by Ilona, creative director for furniture and interiors. She was born in Malta in 1991 and spent her childhood in Bahrain among many cultures, which still feed her work. After studying Product Design in Milan, she was the one graduate from her class asked back to teach a summer course.
In 2012 she moved to the UAE and founded the design department of a luxury wooden decoration company, which went on to complete projects for the governments of Sharjah and Abu Dhabi and for royal families in both emirates. She was later recruited to coach creative start-ups at an incubator run by the Kuwaiti National Fund together with the World Bank and her former school. Coming home to Malta in 2018, she ran the hospitality design section of a well-known design firm and worked on notable hotels. That mix of Gulf, Italian and Maltese experience is unusual among local studios, and it gives UK clients a designer used to demanding briefs and international expectations.
Design style
Her designs fuse three influences: the Mediterranean look of her native Malta, the Middle Eastern taste of her Bahrain childhood and the Italian training she received in Milan. Emotion and empathy come first, so that every interior means something to the people using it, with a touch of irony and playfulness.
The studio sees its rooms as the setting for small moments that later turn into big memories. That makes it a natural choice for a home you will return to every summer, a rental you want to feel distinctive, or a venue where guests should notice the details. The studio asks you to write a little about your project, so it helps to gather a few thoughts first: who will use the space, what you want guests to feel, and any pieces you already own, plus the dates when you hope to use the space. Many UK buyers also use our Malta relocation guide and Malta tax guide for UK nationals when planning a purchase.
Furniture and hospitality experience
Ilona leads furniture as well as interiors, so the studio can think about a room and the pieces within it together. Her earlier role in hospitality design, with hotels in her portfolio, is relevant if you are planning a guest-facing space such as a restaurant, bar or boutique property. Browse hotels across Malta to see the island's range of styles before you decide on a direction.
A project example and the Valletta location
One published project is a 2020 redesign in Sliema of a 50 square metre beautician's premises into a design studio, restoring the existing gypsum ceiling work and making it a feature of the design. The project reflects the studio's habit of keeping original character while giving a space a new purpose.
Valletta is a good place for a design studio. The Valletta guide explains the city, and nearby landmarks include St John's Co-Cathedral and the Upper Barrakka Gardens. Visitors planning a stay can browse hotels in Valletta and where to stay in Malta. When you are ready, use the VisitMalta.co.uk enquiry form on this page and we will pass your message to the studio, which will reply about your project, and about how to share ideas, references and plans.
