Finding the right insurance in a country you have only recently moved to can be confusing, and that is where a local broker earns its keep. MAX Insurance Brokers is based on Independence Avenue in Mosta, the large town at the centre of the island best known for its rotunda church, and it arranges cover for individuals, companies and unusual risks. Its motto is maximum value and maximum protection, and it aims to find the best cover for your needs at the lowest premium it can find.
Our directory of insurance providers in Malta lists other insurers and brokers, and this page explains how MAX works so you can decide whether to send an enquiry.
Who is behind MAX Insurance Brokers
MAX grew out of JK Properties, a real estate business that has operated in Malta since 1999. In 2004 JK Properties brought the international Remax brand to the island and went on to run Remax Malta. In 2008 the group obtained a licence from the Malta Financial Services Authority and founded MAX Insurance Brokers.
The managing director is Mr Mizzi, who has more than 28 years of experience in insurance. He joined a leading broker in 1991 and worked mainly on commercial insurance, then set up his own practice in 1997 as a tied insurance intermediary for one of Malta's major insurers. In 2012 he merged that portfolio into MAX Insurance Brokers Limited and was later appointed managing director.
MAX Insurance Brokers Limited is enrolled on the Brokers List to act as an insurance broker under article 13 of the Insurance Intermediaries Act and is regulated by the MFSA. Our financial services in Malta overview explains how that regulator oversees the sector.
Personal, commercial and bespoke insurance
MAX divides its work into three areas. Personal insurance covers the milestones of ordinary life: a travel policy before a long holiday, comprehensive motor cover for a first car, a home policy when you buy or rent, or life insurance to protect your family. Newcomers from the UK will recognise these as the policies they would arrange at home, with Maltese insurers and Maltese rules behind them.
Commercial insurance is aimed at businesses and professionals. The brokers help clients secure professional indemnity cover, which protects against claims arising from professional work and covers legal defence, and they guide company owners through the wider range of policies a business needs. Founders can read more in our guide to corporate tax in Malta.
Bespoke insurance is for risks that do not fit an off-the-shelf product. MAX has close ties across the whole insurance market and does not draw lines, so it will look for an insurer willing to underwrite whatever you need to cover.
How the process works
The process has five simple steps. If you already have cover, you appoint MAX as your broker, and it contacts you when the policy nears expiry to look for a better policy at a better price. If you are not yet insured, the brokers first establish what the policy needs to cater for, then collect quotes from the local market.
They approach insurers with your exact requirements and receive premiums, together with the underwriting terms behind each one. They then tell you which option offers the best balance between budget and coverage, select the policy you choose and follow up with the policy documents. A blog adds articles on topics such as life insurance myths and what to consider when buying a home in Malta.
If you are planning a move, our guide to relocating to Malta from the UK and our guide to Malta tax for UK nationals cover the other practical steps, and our directory of accountants includes help with filings.
Visiting Mosta and getting in touch
The office is at 32 Independence Avenue, Mosta. Mosta sits close to Mdina and Rabat, so a trip to the brokers combines easily with a visit described in our Mdina guide, and our listing of hotels in Mdina and Rabat shows where to stay in this part of the island. You can also compare areas in our guide to where to stay in Malta, and our page on things to do in Malta helps fill the rest of the trip.
The firm does not publish opening hours. Use the VisitMalta.co.uk enquiry form on this page, say what you need to insure, and we will pass your message to MAX Insurance Brokers, who will reply to you directly.
