The Club Fitness Centre is a community-minded training space in Qrendi, in the south of Malta, with an obstacle course known as the Club Arena at its heart. It suits people who find a conventional gym dull and would rather lift, sprint, climb and crawl alongside a friendly group. If you have ever watched an obstacle course race on television and wondered whether you could do it, this is the kind of place that helps you try.

It is listed with other gyms in Malta in our directory, and this page explains the sessions, the printed prices and how to reach the team.

How The Club began

The Club started in 2017 with a handful of people who wanted to reach their fitness goals in a supportive and motivating setting. It has grown considerably since then, adding facilities, programmes and services. The focus is on strength, conditioning and intense interval training, with obstacle course racing, usually shortened to OCR, as a particular favourite among members.

Owner and coach Julian Briffa describes the aim as building a family rather than just a team. Members take part in OCR events across Malta and Gozo, and in 2019 the group travelled to the UK to enter Tough Mudder as a team. Since then they have also taken part in Rat Race at Burghley and Tough Mudder South in 2022. The guiding principles are called The Club Way: keep improving, and push yourself and others towards your full potential.

Sessions you can book

Most classes last one hour and cost €7.10 each. The weekly pattern includes Push/Pull Tuesdays for upper body strength, Heavy Wednesdays for strength training and tough sets, and Get Down Thursdays for glutes and legs. Outdoor options include a cross-functional session, a cardio-heavy HYROmaX session and general OCR sessions designed to be fun and suitable for people at different levels. There is also a Sunday run and a class for parents.

Children are well catered for with Little Clubbers OCR and Kids OCR Advanced, both at €7.10 per hour-long session. For families looking for more ideas, Adventure Hub and Afterglow Events are two children's activities businesses in our directory.

If you would rather train at your own pace on the obstacles, Club Arena open access costs €12 and gives you the course for obstacle and ninja-style training.

Membership cards

Rather than paying class by class, you can buy a card. The Enthusiast costs €67, The Clubber costs €130 and Beast Clubber costs €255, and each is valid for six months. The cards are priced for different levels of attendance, so it makes sense to think about how often you expect to train before choosing one. For a UK visitor here for a few weeks, single sessions are likely to be the better fit, while someone settling in the south for the season may prefer a card.

The Club also takes gift cards and has a merchandise page for club kit.

Finding The Club and planning your visit

The Club Arena is on Triq Filippu Zammit in Qrendi, a quiet village in the south, so a hire car or taxi is the easiest way to reach it. The area is rich in sights: the Ħaġar Qim temples are close by, the Ħaġar Qim Archaeological Site listing gives visiting details, and the Blue Grotto is a short drive away.

Because many sessions take place outdoors, it helps to read our Malta weather guide before booking summer classes, and our things to do in Malta page for ideas on rest days. If you are still choosing a base, see where to stay in Malta and the best beaches in Malta for cooling off after a hard session.
