The Foto Grafer

The Foto Grafer is one of Malta's best-known photography companies, based on St Thomas Street in Fgura, in the south-east of the island near the Three Cities. It calls itself the country's largest professional photography company and combines studio work, printing and finishing under one roof. A couple's business that grew into a company

The story begins in 1983, just after founders Paul and Mariella Mizzi married. Paul had completed a correspondence course and a part-time course in professional photography in London. In their early twenties, the couple began working from a garage beside their home in Fgura, then moved into the ground floor of their current premises as their client list grew. They soon hired and trained staff and imported the high-end equipment they wanted.

Today Paul leads a team of 14 across four establishments. The company counts 60 years of combined experience among its people, and it has two purpose-built studios, a digital editing suite, printing and finishing facilities, viewing rooms and two shops with client reception areas.

Weddings, portraits and babies

Wedding, portrait and baby photography are the services most visitors will want. The company's own phrase is that anything image related can be handled, and the home page lists weddings, baby photography and commercial photography as its core areas. A highly qualified digital retouching team finishes the pictures.

Commercial work, printing and specialist services

Beyond people photography, the Foto Grafer will photograph products, then print and finish them on practically any surface. It can supply and enhance pictures for a customer who buys a digital camera there, restore and commission fine art photography, produce a rectified photogrammetric survey and recover lost digital picture files. Large display systems for shops, exhibitions, product launches, offices and factories are also available.

The pitch is small company service with big company resources, and no image-related job is considered too big or too small. For a UK client, that breadth is useful: a wedding album, framed prints for the family and a company brochure shoot can all be discussed with the same team, and a lost memory card or damaged old print is not a reason to look elsewhere.
