Training Room is a fully equipped gym in Magħtab, close to Naxxar in the middle of Malta's north, built around coached group classes and open gym access. The offer combines functional fitness, weightlifting, mobility and HYROX under one roof, with barbells, rowers and plenty of other kit. Classes have capped numbers, so beginners and experienced athletes alike get individual attention. It is listed with the other gyms in Malta on VisitMalta.co.uk.

The gym's tag is #TEAMTR, and the focus is on community: strength, effort and the habit of turning up together, whether you want a structured class or the freedom of open gym time to follow your own programme.

Classes at Training Room

Functional fitness is the most frequent and most popular class. It is a high-intensity session that blends weightlifting, cardio and gymnastics, with constantly varied movements designed to improve overall fitness. Alongside it sit Olympic weightlifting classes, which teach the snatch and the clean and jerk and are programmed by owner and weightlifting Olympian Yazmin Stevens.

Mobility is the fastest-booked class at the moment, aiming to improve flexibility, joint range of motion and movement patterns. The Engine class builds cardiovascular endurance and stamina through aerobic work, and functional bodybuilding focuses on strength and muscle through functional movements with careful attention to form. Gymnastics runs in cycles, from handstand progressions to pull-ups and muscle-ups.

On Saturdays, Lift & WOD is a two-part competition-style session of lifting and conditioning, a fun and intense test of strength and endurance. HYROX classes use race-style programming of running, functional strength and endurance to improve fitness and pacing, for competition or everyday training. The gym also publishes a weekly What's On with new classes, special sessions and holiday schedule changes.

The coaching team

The team mixes Olympians, national champions and coaches from many backgrounds. Yazmin Stevens is the owner and head weightlifting coach, holding BWL Level 2 and CrossFit Level 1 qualifications. Dimitrije Avramovic is the gym manager and a Level 1 weightlifting coach, and Clive Cassar is project manager with CrossFit Level 2 and BWL Level 2 coaching qualifications.

Other coaches include Alister Camilleri, who leads HYROX, and Julia Abarca, who coaches gymnastics. Aaron Zahra is a CrossFit Level 2 coach with a degree in physical education, and William Grima coaches mobility alongside his CrossFit and weightlifting qualifications. For a UK visitor, that depth of qualified coaching is a good reason to choose a class rather than train alone, especially if you have not lifted or done gymnastics before and want someone to check your technique.

Visiting and opening hours

The gym is open Monday to Friday from 6am to 12pm and again from 3pm to 9pm, with weekend sessions on Saturday and Sunday from 8am to 12pm. Because classes are capped, book ahead if you want a particular session during a short trip. Membership details are listed on the gym's own pages, so ask what suits a stay of a few weeks or a longer move; our Malta relocation guide covers the wider practicalities.

Magħtab is inland, handy for the villages and sights of the north and centre. Our Mdina guide covers the walled city a short drive away, the Valletta guide covers the capital, and the things to do in Malta page suggests how to fill the rest of your day.
