Vittoriosa Lawn Tennis Club is a members' club on Corradino Road in Paola, on the inner side of Grand Harbour. Despite the name, which nods to the historic city of Vittoriosa, the club sits a short way inland from the waterfront. Its season is built around organised competition: team events, chosen doubles and mixed doubles, with a calendar that runs through the summer and well into the autumn.
For UK readers the club is best understood as a traditional membership club rather than a pay-and-play tennis centre. Most of what it publishes concerns tournaments and the people who enter them. If you are moving to the island and want a regular game, or you are visiting and hope to hit some balls, the first step is to ask. The club is listed in our directory of tennis clubs and courts in Malta, where you can compare other places to play.
What the club does through the year
The club's website carries sections for tournaments, a calendar, coaching, membership, history and general information, and a members' login area. The tournament listings for 2026 show four events running at the same time: the Sports Experience Chosen Doubles, the Samsung Rennie Tonna Team Tournament, the Freezing Point Mixed Chosen Doubles and the Tennis Trade Team Tournament. Chosen doubles means partners are picked by the players themselves rather than drawn by the organisers, while the team events group entrants into squads under captains.
Sponsorship is a feature of the calendar. Several tournaments carry the name of a local business, which is a common way for Maltese sports clubs to fund prizes and organisation. For a newcomer, it also means there is always something to join or watch between spring and December, rather than a single end-of-season competition.
The Samsung Rennie Tonna Team Tournament
The club's flagship summer event is the annual Samsung Rennie Tonna Team Tournament, played between July and October and sponsored by Samsung. The 2026 edition started on Wednesday 15 July. Matches are played on Wednesdays and Fridays, with other days used if the schedule needs it, and the dates are provisional because weather and availability can shift them.
The format is two rounds over ten weeks. Each rubber, meaning each individual match within a team encounter, is two sets using the deciding point system, so a game that reaches deuce is settled by a single point. Every player takes part in at least six matches. Six teams, lettered A to F, each have their own captain, and the semi-finals fall at the end of September and the start of October, with the final on 9 October.
Entry is on a first come, first served basis and is open to paid-up members aged 14 and over. The participation fee is €20, and only applications that arrive with the fee are accepted. Members who have not paid their annual membership are not accepted, and the committee may refuse an application without giving a reason. Players who list too many unavailable dates may also be held back for a committee decision. Bookings for the 2026 edition are now closed.
The Tennis Trade Team Tournament
The autumn event is the Tennis Trade Team Tournament, sponsored by Tennis Trading. The 2026 edition begins on Wednesday 28 October and runs through November into December. Matches take place on Wednesdays and Fridays, and play starts at 6.30pm on both evenings, which suits members who work during the day.
Players are grouped into teams by the captains, so entrants are asked to state their unavailable dates before selection. The tournament is played on an 18-game basis, and each player appears in at least three encounters. The weekly schedule gives five rounds of play from late October to late November, followed by semi-finals on 2 and 4 December and a final on 11 December. The participation fee is €15, payable with the application, and the closing date for entries was 14 October 2026. Bookings are now closed, but the same pattern of entry, fee and committee approval applies to the club's other events.
Membership, coaching and visiting from the UK
Because the tournaments are for paid-up members, membership is the way into the club's competitive tennis. The website has a dedicated membership section and a coaching section, so anyone settling in Malta and looking for a regular tennis community should ask about joining and about lessons. Whether a short-stay visitor can be offered a court or a guest game is something to ask the club directly through our form.
Paola is easy to combine with sightseeing. The Hypogeum of Ħal Saflieni, the underground Neolithic burial complex, is in the same town, and our directory has a page for the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum with visiting details. The Ħal-Tarxien Prehistoric Complex is also close by. Heat shapes the tennis year, so read our Malta weather guide before planning a trip around play.
Around Paola and the Three Cities
The club's neighbours across the water are the fortified towns of Birgu, Senglea and Cospicua. Our Three Cities guide covers the group, and the Vittoriosa guide takes you into Birgu itself, where the Knights of St John first settled. Valletta is a short journey away, and the Valletta guide is a good companion for a day off the court.
If you are planning a wider trip, things to do in Malta lists the main sights, and where to stay in Malta explains which areas suit which kind of holiday. Accommodation is booked through our partner TripX rather than through this page.
To ask about joining, coaching or visiting, use the VisitMalta.co.uk enquiry form on this page and we will pass your message to Vittoriosa Lawn Tennis Club, who will reply to you directly.
