Events and Venues at the Valletta Waterfront

The Valletta Waterfront in Floriana hosts a year-round programme of free family entertainment, concerts, festivals and seasonal events, and has four historic venues that can be hired for private and corporate occasions. This page sets out what usually happens through the year and how to start a venue enquiry. Dates change from season to season, so treat the calendar below as a guide to what to expect rather than a promise.

The Valletta Waterfront promenade with palm trees, market stalls and visitors

The Promenade

275 metres long, central promenade

A 275 metre strolling promenade lined with restaurants, bars and shops, suited to promotions and outdoor events.

The promenade is the spine of the waterfront and doubles as an events space for corporate gatherings, brand promotions and private parties. Several outlets have private areas, and there are plenty of outdoor corners to use.

It is reachable by car, taxi, public transport, water taxi or yacht, with discounted on-site parking and space for coaches and minibuses.

Sagrestia Vault and the Chapel

Air-conditioned, outdoor patio, separate service entrance

An intimate vault beside a small chapel, good for concerts, receptions and exhibitions.

Attached to a sixteenth-century vault is a little chapel dedicated to the Flight of the Holy Family to Egypt. Together they make a private, atmospheric space with excellent acoustics, an outdoor patio and a separate back-of-house entrance.

The chapel can serve as a welcome area or a small exhibition entrance, and the vault is a favourite for small seminars, product launches and family occasions.

Built below the Valletta bastions in 1727 to store oil for street lamps, the hall later became part of the island's first power house. Today its arched limestone ceiling and skylights make a dramatic backdrop for dinners, launches and receptions.

It has air-conditioning, Wi-Fi, drive-in access for staging and a 130 square metre courtyard for breakout use.

Theatre, music and period costume reimagine the island's seafaring stories, featuring Count Cagliostro and a fictional Pirate Queen.

It is a handy appetiser before dinner and suits the whole family.

A waterfront that keeps a busy diary

The long row of eighteenth-century harbourside stores below Valletta has become one of the island's most agreeable places to spend an evening, and a good part of that is down to its events. Throughout the year the central promenade is used for free family entertainment, live music, tasting festivals, cultural evenings and religious celebrations. Many of them cost nothing to enter, and the restaurants and bars carry on serving as usual while they run, so you can dip in and out as you please.

For visitors from Britain the appeal is easy to grasp. You get a floodlit Baroque setting, the Grand Harbour just beside you, and a programme that suits couples, families and cruise passengers alike. If you are building a wider plan, our Valletta Waterfront overview explains how the whole site fits together, and the restaurants and bars page will help you choose somewhere to eat before or after a show.

An events calendar through the year

The programme below follows the seasons. It describes recurring events and what they are generally like. Exact dates, line-ups and times are announced close to each event and can change, so check the latest listing before you travel and never build a trip around a date you have not confirmed.

Spring. Easter brings an egg hunt for young children, which this year used QR codes in place of traditional paper clues, with the Easter Bunny and costumed characters on hand. Colour Fest follows on weekends in April, a family event that celebrates art, music and togetherness against the famous coloured doors.

Early summer. The Wine Fest takes over the promenade for four evenings, with more than 50 local and international wines to try, live bands, wine quizzes and information sessions. It is built around a €20 package that includes four tokens and a souvenir glass, though buying one is entirely optional. Around this time of year there are also one-off evenings such as a classic car gathering, when owners of vintage and modern MGs line up along the promenade.

High summer. Every Thursday evening in July and August, Maltese Nights offers folk dancing, live Maltese songs, falconry displays, the rattling sound of the terramaxka, crafts and traditional games. It is free to enter and is probably the single best way for a first-time visitor to meet Maltese tradition in a relaxed setting. Tuesday evenings through the season bring a short outdoor theatre show, Cagliostro and the Pirate Queen.

Autumn. October opens with Oktoberfest, three nights of beer, food, live music and Bavarian-inspired fun, again with an optional €20 package covering four tokens and a reusable cup. A weekend family programme called Autumn Vibes runs from early October into November, and the final days of October bring a children's Halloween evening with trick or treating for patrons, crafts and bouncy castles. The Jazz Series gives Sagrestia Vault a run of Thursday concerts, and November adds quiz nights.

Winter. The Christmas programme begins at the end of November with a lighting event and the arrival of Santa Claus and Mrs Claus. From 15 December to 6 January the Maltese nativity crib exhibition fills Sagrestia Vault, and on 31 December the waterfront holds a New Year's Eve celebration beneath fireworks. Throughout the year, Holy Mass is also celebrated every Saturday in the little chapel.

Weddings, receptions and family celebrations

Few settings in Malta photograph as well as this one, and the venues here cover most wedding and celebration styles. The open-air harbourside space suits a grand dinner or a large reception with the harbour behind your guests. Sagrestia Vault and its chapel are better for something small and intimate, such as a blessing, a drinks reception or a family gathering, while Magazino Hall offers a covered, air-conditioned room with a stone vaulted ceiling for larger guest lists.

Couples can choose their own suppliers in any of the venues, which gives you freedom over caterers, florists, music and styling. Parking for coaches, minibuses and cars is available on request, and the site is close to the airport and the capital, which helps when guests are flying in from the UK. If you are thinking about where family and friends will sleep, our guide to where to stay in Malta is a sensible companion read.

For a day that mixes celebration and sightseeing, a morning at St John's Co-Cathedral or the Upper Barrakka Gardens in Valletta makes a lovely prelude to an evening at the waterfront.

Parties, product launches and corporate events

The venues are also used for concerts, galas, exhibitions, seminars and product launches. The long promenade works well for brand activations and promotions because it is already full of people strolling between restaurants, shops and the harbour. Magazino Hall has drive-in access for staging platforms, Wi-Fi and full air-conditioning, which makes it practical for conferences and trade evenings, and its adjoining courtyard gives delegates somewhere to step out during breaks.

The site's indoor venues are climate controlled, and the open-air space has no height restriction, which is useful for large stages and lighting rigs. Planners can also draw on ready infrastructure for staging, catering and audiovisual needs. If your group is arriving by sea, read about the Valletta Cruise Port next door, and for transport options see getting to the waterfront.

Booking a venue

Enquiries for the four venues are handled through our enquiry pages. Tell us the type of occasion, your preferred date or season, the number of guests you expect, whether you want music or staging, and any catering ideas. The more detail you give, the easier it is to suggest the best space.

It is wise to ask early for popular periods such as summer weekends and the December festive season, since the waterfront also runs its own programme. Ask at the same time about parking, accessibility, set-up time and any noise or weather arrangements for outdoor events. Venue viewings can be requested as part of the enquiry. You may also want to browse the attractions at the waterfront and the shops if your guests will have free time.
