Gymnasia is a large, purpose-built gym in Paola, a town just south of Valletta and close to the Three Cities. The club occupies roughly 1,000 square metres and is laid out in separate zones, so people lifting weights, working on cardio or joining a class are not all competing for the same floor. It is listed in our directory of gyms in Malta, and it suits both residents who want a long-term membership and visitors who simply need somewhere serious to train for a day or a fortnight.
How Gymnasia began
The gym grew out of one trainer's ambition. Its founder, Alan, qualified in fitness in the UK, spent years in Sydney working with private personal training clients, and then returned to Malta, where interest in health and fitness was rising. He trained clients privately for a number of years before deciding to open a club of his own, with the aim of serving the south of the island, which he felt had long lacked a proper gym.
The first club dates from 2010. On 20 November 2022 Gymnasia reopened in new premises that are far larger and more fully equipped than anything before. The stated mission is to motivate the local community to take part in activities that support general health and wellbeing, with good facilities, expertise and programmes at affordable prices. Paola is a short hop from the capital, so if you are staying in the city, our Valletta guide will help you plan the rest of your day around a session here.
Classes and the Strong Box
Six group classes are offered. Functional Fitness builds strength, coordination and balance through basic drills and conditioning work. Calisthenics uses bodyweight exercises to build strength and control, with full body sessions that suit every level. Spinning is led by an instructor through hills, sprints and intervals on the bike, set to powerful music. Yoga is a 45 minute, low impact session open to complete beginners. Sculpt tones the whole body with free weights, resistance bands and bodyweight work. Rise n' Squat mixes cardio with high and low impact moves and gives extra attention to the core.
The Strong Box is the club's functional training space, with a high-energy atmosphere, big playlists and dramatic lighting. It is included free with any Gymnasia membership. Hyrox, a fitness racing format, is also part of the offer. First-time class users are asked to create an account when they book online.
