You can send an enquiry through the VisitMalta.co.uk form on this page.

Żurrieq is a town in the south of Malta, close to the cliffs and sea caves that bring visitors to the coast. HSBC Bank Malta plc has a local branch there on Triq Il-Kbira, which gives residents and second-home owners in the south a bank they can visit without travelling to the busier central towns.

HSBC Malta is the Maltese arm of the global HSBC group, and this entry appears in our directory of banks in Malta. Its website is written for people using the bank in Malta and does not carry separate information for the Żurrieq branch, so this page describes the bank's services as they apply across its branches.

Visiting and contacting the branch

The bank asks customers who want to see someone in person to request an appointment. You fill in a short request, the bank calls you back, and a meeting is arranged at the branch of your choice, which can be Żurrieq. Appointments are used for account openings, mortgage talks and meetings with a Financial Planning Adviser or a Premier Relationship Manager.

For quick questions there are telephone services: Premier customers can reach a representative at any hour, Advance customers from 08:00 to 18:00 and retail customers from 08:00 to 16:00, excluding Sundays and public holidays. A card lost or stolen can be reported at any time of day or night. If you live in the area and are choosing between the coast and the town centre for a visit, our guides to the Blue Grotto and the Ħaġar Qim temples cover the best-known sights nearby.

Ways to bank day to day

Most routine banking can be done without queuing. HSBC provides online banking, a mobile banking app that can use fingerprint or face recognition stored on your phone, phone banking, mobile alerts and mobile top-ups. A Secure Key device creates short-lived one-time codes that protect online transactions, so a stolen password alone is not enough to move money.

Personal customers choose between HSBC Premier, HSBC Advance, a graduate version of Advance, a student account, a current account and a basic bank account, with a switching service for people moving from another bank. Savings can go into a savings account, an online savings account or a term deposit. Anyone sending money from the UK should give the payer the account IBAN and HSBC Malta's BIC, since there is no sort code to quote. Our guide to relocating to Malta from the UK and the Malta tax guide for UK nationals cover the wider arrangements.

Cards and fixing problems

Debit cards come in Premier, Advance, student and international versions, and credit cards include Premier, Advance, Mastercard and Visa options with a supplementary card for an additional user. New and replacement cards arrive by post, normally within seven working days, with the PIN sent separately. Online card payments are confirmed with two-factor authentication.

If a transaction on your statement looks wrong, check for an unfamiliar merchant description, a delayed processing date, a joint account holder, or an exchange rate difference after travelling. To dispute a card payment, return the dispute form with your evidence within 60 days of the transaction. Complaints are acknowledged within 48 hours and the bank aims to answer within ten working days; they can be raised in English or Maltese, with the Arbiter for Financial Services as the next step.

Home loans, protection and investing

The Classic Home Loan can be used for a main home or a second property, subject to lending criteria, and first time buyers may spread repayment over a longer term than other borrowers. Applicants should be ready with recent payslips or tax returns, identity or residence documents, the purchase agreement and a valuation by the bank's architect. For independent mortgage advice, see Alecta Advisors.

Life, critical illness, loan, travel and buildings insurance are available, and the bank also provides wealth management, funds and pension plans. A comparison with brokers is possible through AIB Insurance Brokers. The sector as a whole is outlined in our financial services in Malta overview.
